Blu ray is probably the best overall format.

I don't care about the menus, I just don't want 45 minutes of forced previews, Federal warnings, and language selection before being able to get to the menu to play the movie.

I dont get the whole thing, so you build up a massive library of movies and then what? You cant possibly have seen everything you bought and voilá, the time has come to upgrade to the newest format. Is it really about so called physical media preservation at this point? Or is it more like what everyone else is doing - constantly buying the newest stuff. I get that this video is content but I really do disagree with this take that blu rays fall off. It's the best bang for the buck you can get if we look at both price and the viewing experience. Blu rays are great.

Overall, for modern displays, Bluray is the perfect middle-ground format.

I still want the whole industry to keep on releasing Blu-ray combos on new movies and rereleasing movies. Since I don't have a 4K TV or player.

I wish Blu-rays had DVD-like menus. Menus on most Blu-rays suck. DVD menu showed creativity and effort.

I'm a blu-ray collector. It only 'sucks' if you're considering it through the lens of 'in what regards is this format better than others?' None. But it you're considering it in terms of the best overall option relative to other options, then it is actually the best option.
I avoid 4K because it far too expensive for me to collect for and make the most of.
I avoid DVD because the quality is low and the discs are too prone to damage.
Blu-ray has great quality, great durability, great library, and great second-hand price.
Win Win Win Win

Blu-ray is my format of choice. DVD doesn't have enough resolution to me, but Blu-ray has (if allowed by the source material). I am not interested of 4K. I don't have 4K player nor 4K TV. Blu-ray may suck for the reasons told in this video, but it is what it is. Life sucks and then you die.

In the inflationary environment we find ourselves in Bluray is the best value for cost in my opinion .

The reason why blue rays don’t sell as good as they did before is because movie collectors, like my self started with DVDs when they first came, then moved to the better format of Blu-ray and now to the better format of 4K. As new releases come out I will never go back. I’ll only buy 4K. Most collectors that are serious about films are not going backwards. Neither not that there’s anything wrong with Blu-ray. Blu-ray looks outstanding. I don’t even upgrade Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray if I have the Blu-ray, I keep it. As for the menus and packaging I never cared about that. I just care about the movie. I don’t buy steel books ever. I always aim for the standard 4K edition.

In Norway, blurays often cost 1/5 of the 4k equivalent, which makes it the ultimate format.

This is one collector that does not agree with you. I have a 4k player and 4k tv but buy both blu ray and 4k. I refuse to buy a dvd, blu ray is as low as i go. I usually watch movies with friends and family and no-one says a thing if i pop
in a 4k or a blu ray in the player. Us tech nerds know there is a difference but to your average person most people don't pixel peep that hard. I will choose the cheaper blu ray any day of the week over the crazy prices they charge for 4k's. The only exception is great black Friday deals on 4k discs, or if i get a good deal. Otherwise i will save the money and get a great looking disc on a format which no-one will ever say "eh gross is this a blu ray disc we are watching?"

4K sucks especially as a collector. High cost of entry and inconsistent quality issues that make you need to do your research before you purchase a movie. Film grain is used to make things look more natural to the human eye so when all you're doing is just removing that then you end up taking the risk of entering uncanny valley. Also the longer the format exists the more AI renders are going to be an issues.

The average consumer hasn't adopted the 4K format which is why they have become so expensive. Being a cinephile is not like being an audiophile in that sense. Most people just want to buy movies so they can have them to watch. So if all you want is something equal to what you can get from streaming services that's Blu-ray which is why it's going to have more staying power than 4K. 4K is just a bunch of double dipping at this point because new releases aren't going to coming to be getting physical media at all these days.

As someone who grew up in the 90s, I love Friends. I had the entire series on VHS, but I sold those off and got the DVD set of friends to free up space on the shelves. Honestly I never got the Friends BluRay set because I didn't see the point, it was recorded before 1080p even existed. I feel the same way about the 4k release, I don't see the point. DVD passes the good enough test for me where Friends is concerned.

I primarily go for 4k nowadays, but I still like BluRay and still pick them up depending on the film or label. Some films are perfectly Ok on BluRay so I don’t see the need to hold out for a 4k release and then there’s labels like Criterion. I find the image quality of their BluRays to be fantastic so while many films I’d rather wait for a 4k release, if it’s a criterion BluRay, I pick it up with confidence and haven’t been disappointed yet. The menu argument is a moot point for me. The fancy interactive menus are cool, but not necessary. Visual and audio quality are the only things that really matter to me. As long as the menu gives me basic options like choosing my audio format before I play the movie when there’s multiple formats available, I’m happy.

Dvd or blueray for me, I don't want 4k it's to easy to scatch

one other reason to keep DVD, sometimes the Blu ray will have just one cut of a movie. Either theatrical or extended while dvd have both. But there’s has been times where the directors cut is only on blu ray, no theatrical or vice versa

Why do people still buy them then? Because they still fucking rock and way better than staring at a tablet watching Paul Blart as his fucking skooter gets two feet then stops dead ass in the middle of the road then you see a swirling circle then the skooter goes a centimeter then that fucking circle appears again. That shit always pisses me off. I hate the 4 hour version of Paul Blart, it puts me to sleep every single fucking time.

I'm fine with blu ray. Love the format. I don't own 4K and I don't want to, I stop at blu ray

Bluray doesn’t suck at all. I own around 50-60 4K titles so I can’t be labeled a broke hater either. Bluray still looks excellent and has had way less half assed releases than 4k. How many times has the 4K edited something out, the HDR ruined the tone of the film, DNR slathered all over to make it look “new”, AI used to make it look “new”, and it is a 2k scan in 4K packaging? Etc. Don’t get me wrong each format has issues but 4K isn’t perfect and bluray doesn’t suck.
