Bruce Lee was very critical of traditional styles of karate and kung fu. His philosophy was to train hard and use whatever worked for you. He practiced kicks and punches from karate, kung fu, and boxing. He studied grappling from judo, jujitsu, and a little bit of amateur wrestling. I wonder if he hadn't passed at such a young age would modern mma have came around a lot sooner. Food for thought.

I had the privilege of practicing various styles within both martial arts... Based on my experience and observations, effectiveness is not only based on the style of fighting but also on the practitioner. Great video by the way.

Beautifully written Sifu Prince, worthy of a PHD thesis on the martial arts. Keep up the great work, it is appreciated!

Great video! If I might add; Tony Jaa demonstrates a myriad of styles in his movies as well. I don't think he is quite on Bruce Lee's level overall but Tony Jaa is definitely up there with the best cinematically

I appreciate both so much. When I was younger I did Kyokushin Karate which was heavily competition focused, we went in a lot of tournaments and did a lot of hard training, sparring and conditioning.

Later in life I did a style of Kung Fu called Jow Ga which was a beautiful mix of southern and northern Shaolin. It wasn't competitive at all and focused largely on fitness, technique and forms. Their forms were so long and intricate that you really did have to spend a lot of time on them but they looked amazing. They did very little sparring or competing. I still got a lot out of it and loved the school, was such a good bunch of people.

Both experiences were very different but I cherish them both. Karate definitely made me a better fighter but it was also due to the difference focus of the styles. If I'd done a Kung Fu that focused heavily on Sanda, it would've been very different.

Incredible video! A lot of people focus on 'which style is better/stronger' but they lose sight of how connected the martial arts is.

I have a 2nd degree Black Belt in Traditional Tae Kwon Do, but I also studied Aikido in order to learn to be mote fluid.

As for who inspired me, I could list off the usual names: Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris. But I will add one more name to that list: Cynthia Rothrock. I loved watching her movies when I was younger and the fact that she has mastered several different disciplines.

Stay safe and keep up the great content!

I'm liking these videos. You have a respect for traditional martial arts and not taking it to far in the sense of mythicizing the power of these martial arts. It's not about the martial arts as it is about the martial artist.

True Okinawan Karate, or Okinawan Te, is based off of pressure points, joint locks, and throws. It's just that when it went to the main land of Japan it got watered down for school children which created sports karate. Karate, as the world knows it, spread like wild fire when the service men of WWII started returning back to the corners of the world with a basic knowledge of the art. However, today there are practitioners of the true art of Okinawan Te trying to revive the true art. The true art of karate is called Kyusho Jitsu and Tuite Jitsu.

It's not the martial art. It's the man.

Goldrnbell, apart from this channel my only other go-to for martial arts related knowledge is Jesse Encamp. Watched some videos of his talking about the similarities between Kung Fu and Karate techniques, immediately wished your channel would pick up a similar topic. When i watch something here (especially Karate related), immediately wish Jesse Encamp would pick up the same topic as well. I understand much better when learning something from multiple points of view, hence i feel very blessed to live in an era with multiple people are earnestly sharing knowledge gained from serious research. Thank you very much, please keep entertaining and educating 🙏

When I was 16 and I first got mt drivers license I was fascinated by cars. I asked my older brother which car would win in a race a Mustang or a Camaro. He smiled and replied It depends on the driver. So both aspects come into play, the style and the practitioner.

Vic Moore did block Lee’s punches; the agreement was that Lee would punch towards Vic’s chest, and after blocking the hits 3 times, Lee switched to aim for Vic’s face, catching him off guard. He’s explained as much in interviews where he praised Lee’s speed.

I have to say that I like you videos a lot. I have watched quite a few of your videos and you seem to know what you are talking about. I like you I have watched all of Bruce lee's movies, about 20 times. I have also grownup on the late-night kung fu shows. For me Bruce Lee was the start of what is known today. I don't have to mention Jackie Chan, he was there. I look at now Tony Jaa, not the same fighting skills. Jet Li, great movies and skills. Just like Tony. And there are a few other that you have mentioned. Thank you for your videos.

The guy who traded speed punches with Bruce Lee talked about how the last two punches Bruce was knowingly out of range. That's why the guy and Bruce laughed together because Bruce couldn't get within range without him catching him, but he could fake him out by striking just outside of his range.

I trained in Tien Shun Pai Kung Fu and Shorin Ryu Karate. Each one had their pro's & cons but I will say that the Karate help me to be a better fighter. I think also had a lot to do with the instructor. Good teachers play major roll also.
