FIRST LOOK: New Kia EV2 - this changes EVERYTHING!

You know how Kia trademarked the names EV1 to 9 for its electric car range? Well, this is the mini, SUV-like Kia EV2. Cute, isn’t it?! It's going up against other small-ish cars like the Citroen e-C3, Jeep Avenger, VW ID.2, Hyundai Inster and Renault 5 - along with the forthcoming Skoda Epiq.

And yes, this is a concept car but if previous Kia concepts - like the EV3 and EV9 - have taught us anything, it’s that this probably looks very similar to the final production car. Join Ginny as she takes a first look around what could be a real gamechanger when it arrives next year.

This looks fantastic. It's great that we are now getting a compelling choice of new smaller EVs

It feels like Kia and Hyundai are the only manufacturers that are even trying. Constant hit after hit

That should be sold in the U.S. too! It’s exactly what I would buy.

LFP is made to sound like the cheap compromise option. While it may have lower energy density and slower charging it's also longer lasting and needs less care when charging

Ok I'm not a fan of SUVs but this KIA EV2 looks just soo good, rally considering waiting for it to arrive to market instead of getting Renault 5 now.
Would love if they made 4wd version, don't need powerful motors just enough to be like EV version of original Fiat Panda 4x4 or Suzuki Jimny.
Ginny awesome video

Please don't say that EV batteries use rare earths. THEY DON'T!! Cobalt, manganese and nickel are not rare earths. The rare earths are used in items such as permanent magnets (found in electric motors) or touch screens.

Looks great. Would be nice with a direct comparison with EV3. I'd love if the rails and flippable seats make it into production. These things always look so fun in concept cars. Perhaps once full self driving is where it needs to be, is when we'll see it finally happen? Flip the seats around and socialise during the self driving trip?

I like it. A bit less awkward looking than the EV3. Even if the barn doors don’t make it to production is this the closest we have seen to a BMW i3 successor. Seems to be about the same size.

Really wish this was coming to the States. There have been rumors that the Kia Soul is going out of production, and this is basically the same size!

You missed out the best bit about LFP batteries - you can constantly charge them up to100% with little degradation and they have far more recharge cycles.

For the majority of users it's often better getting the LFP than the bigger battery that usually is a more traditional make up as it's 100% charge is pretty similar to the bigger batteries 80%, you just miss out on the few times a year you might need the additional range when you fully charge the larger one.

Well if you want those doors, get a used BMW i3. That's a nice to drive car with decent range for a mainly city car.

Let's hope Kia UK will get hold of that sexy matte paint...as the EV6 doesn't currently get the really lovely matte blue that the rest of Europe does...frankly it could have swayed us into buying it.

Thanks for the "review" of this KIA EV2. When it is around €25.000 it should be okay.
A bit sadly, it is a concept and (for us) about 2 years to late on the market.
We just bought the Dongfeng BOX for €23.400, with a 42kWh LFP battery.
360 degrees cameras, level 2 ADAS, and lots of inside space, comfort and luxury.
And most important of all, we have been riding it 5.500km all winter since November 2024 and easy 200mls real world range.
The BOX uses around 7.8km per kWh on average.
Next May we take it on a 2.000km round trip from Netherlands to Austria.

Going to be fun trying to open those doors in the car park slots, in the UK

oh Ginny; I was just about to see when I can order one of these when you said you didn't expect the doors to be as shown...

Main differentiator I feel between Hyundai and Kia (the two major brands at the moment, if you want quality without going the China route or Tesla), is that Kia has a much better design language. That goes for both the Kia EV2 compared to the Inster, and EV3 compared to the Ioniq 5. Both brands are so ahead of the rest, however.

Only thing I see as a missed chance on the EV2. Would it not make a lot more sense if it was the back-row that was moveable? If so you could still get a lot of leg room if the initial starting position was a bit further back than normal, while on the other hand, when you are driving with 2 people (90% of the time), you could flip up the backseat and slide it all the way to the front. That would leave you with a gigantic luggage room for its size, making it actually a greater substitute of the eGOLF-size segment, which is still a more easy cruiser than EV3 at the moment (but far less capable and roomy, especially luggage).

I also wish that even in these mid-range price brackets, Kia would allow a high-end sound system on par with Tesla and Volvo, as an option, for those of us who wish to cash out for sound.

It looks a bit basic inside. It will need to cost a bit less than that to sell well, nearer the £20k mark. Is it just a 4 seater, and how big is the boot ?

It needs to be better/ cheaper than the Inster with a longer range and faster charging

Kia has the electric car thing figured out. I was frustrated with Tesla plowing ahead with very expensive models and no affordable model in sight. Kia now has a car in every price bucket and size. With this approach, Kia will dominate market share before long. I just hope they do LFP in the US version EV3.
