Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was launched on July 16, 1969, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and consisted of a command module (named Columbia) and a lunar module (named Eagle). The crew consisted of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

The mission's objective was to land on the Moon and return safely to Earth, and it was the culmination of the Apollo program, which was launched by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 with the goal of landing a man on the Moon by the end of the decade.

After a three-day journey, the Eagle lunar module, manned by Armstrong and Aldrin, landed on the Moon's surface on July 20, 1969, while Collins orbited above in the Columbia module. Armstrong, who was the commander of the mission, famously declared, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" as he took the first steps on the lunar surface. Aldrin followed him shortly afterwards.

The crew collected samples of the lunar surface, conducted experiments, and planted the American flag on the Moon. After 21 hours and 36 minutes on the lunar surface, the Eagle module successfully launched back to the Columbia and the two spacecraft returned to Earth on July 24, 1969.

The Apollo 11 mission was a historic achievement and marked the first time humans had ever set foot on another celestial body. It was watched by an estimated 600 million people around the world and was hailed as a major victory for the United States during the Cold War.

I was 13 years old when the Eagle landed. I listened to the audio during the TV broadcast, this is the first time I “saw” it and it was a awe inspiring. I never realized how tenuous the mission was until now. Thanks HGA!

This animation is great the 3D viewing angles (seen on the lunar surface, seen above the LEM with a lot of realism . It was phenomenal then still today.

It's interesting that when the time comes to land humans on mars we're not going to get any conversation between crew and mission control.

First time listening to the whole landing process, amazing to hear them detail every little detail about the landing process!

For anyone that didn't know- that "60 seconds" and "30 seconds" was how long before they ran out of fuel and would have to immediately abort and launch the ascent module, mere feet from the surface. The original landing zone was full of giant boulders so they came right down to the wire reaching a suitable spot.

President Nixon had two speeches ready. Thankfully, he didn't have to use the other one.
