Not sure if women were ever naturally hypergamous, but historically, in several cultures, their FATHERS/families were. Women did not have the agency in marriage choice or even in child bearing choices in cases. For many of our grandmothers/great grandmothers marriage was hard labor - indentured servitude of the women under the guise of love and marriage.

People forget that till quite recently, in most cultures, women didn't get to even chose if or who they married.

It was usually decided by elders in the family, often the father. And it was very common to view these marriages as business opportunities or guarantees.

Men used the trade of women to increase their ( the man' s) status in society. Eg marrying your daughter to the rich guy in town even if he is your age. Men raised their children as commodities and their value was tied to their ability to marry well to benefit their family.

Like I always say, gold digger is a genderless occupation.

Especially after the 3/5ths human discussion, they should be able to extrapolate that women were not considered technically fully human until after suffrage 1919. And still socially are not - as evidenced by gender pay gap.

I like the way my pastor defined "naturally" as a means of addressing the gender stuff. He basically used this definition of natural: "as might be expected." So saying that women are naturally hypergamist isn't wrong per say...women get paid less, are still discriminated against in the labor force, we still live in a patriarchy. So "as might be expected" women would be hypergamist (let's just assume white women for sake of argument...cause i still dont know why black people think this has anything to do with us). But as womens societal circumstances change more and more toward equality, womens relationship with hypergamy "as might be expected" would change. Natural in this definition does not equal biology, although biology can be a factor. Natural also doesn't mean that it's the way things should or should not be. Natural is simply a way things would primarily be/behave based on the circumstances surrounding that person, place or thing.

If hypergamy is defined as women dating someone with more resources and physical strength than them then I guess you could call it “natural” because animals in the wild practice this mating style as well. But still, the reason is because of the “natural” persistence of males dominating the accumulation of resources rather by strength or by political means like patriarchy. Either way the males need to get over it because it’s their fault 🤷🏾‍♀️ Human females wouldn’t have to practice hypergamy if the men would willingly share power and resources but they refuse to do so, so again GET OVER IT!!
