After student-led protests, Bangladesh's Supreme Court has ruled to eliminate most of the quotas on government jobs. At least 114 people have lost their lives in the violent demonstrations that erupted over the job-reservation system.

Dismissing a lower court order, the Supreme Court's Appellate Division directed that 93 per cent of government jobs should be open to candidates on merit, without quotas, announced said lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque, who represents the students seeking to end the quota system.

As a result of this decision, business activities have gradually resumed in the capital city, Dhaka. Grocer, Tanvir Hassan, a local grocer, said "people swarmed in like bees," to his store after a government-ordered curfew imposed on Friday was eased.

Meanwhile, Bangladeshis intending trying to leave the country crowded waited in crowds outside an airline office in Dhaka due to flight cancellations caused by curfews.

Quotas in any form are inherently discriminatory. Someone loses out no matter how small or big a quota system is. It’s better if they don’t exist. If they must, it has to be temporary and short term. It’s unfortunate people had to die before the Supreme Court acted.

This is not a declaration of fair justice.

There is no such thing as humanity in the outside world, a small country in South Asia is carrying out indiscriminate genocide in Bangladesh🇧🇩, where is humanity today?

Ok so they reduced it? They didnt get rid of it!? What about the lives that were lost in this protest? What will you give to them? They think "reducing" it will make a change? Why dont they start by providing more job opportunities? What about ways to get rid of inflation? Why do people work 8am-5pm only to get $200 a month? Bangladesh is a poor country. People work so hard yet its so hard for them to afford anything they can barely buy groceries with their income but Hasina doesnt care. As long as she is eating good right? Who cares about the poor and who cares about the people.... as long as her bond with India remains.

However, the government can reduce this quota rate if it wants. The Supreme Court has directed the government to issue a notification in this regard.

Till Sunday About four hundred students lost their lives in police firing. According to various sources, tens of thousands of protesting students were seriously injured. But the actual number may be much higher, comparable only to the Nazi-Hitlerian holocaust."
