I will add you also have to demonstrate that you can mix very smoothly and effectly, otherwise you come off as a dj that simply can't mix or transition well. And while people may not technically know what's going, most people have a feel for good music and if it's distorted or not matched up right they'll know it is sounding like ameture hour.

I doubt the second one, they might not be able to recognize that it is happening, but subconsciously we are very good at identifying the root note of a scale and so expect to return to it at some point, if you don't mix in key they might not conciously notice but they will feel as if the music is aimlessly cruising without origin and destination

Exactly.
As long as the music is good, simple transitions are fine.
Flashy transitions are for utube short videos, or mixing competitions. Or top DJ events.
They're not even necessary if you are mixing good danse tracks. Mostly they're used cos the music playing isnt good, and it's to attempt to improve them.

No doubt on #3. I remember back during quarantine, Sullivan King's "Room Service" set. At some point he says "I effed it up, yay!". Even as a DJ myself, to this day I can't tell what it was he 'messed up'.

Yeah.
The only wrong thing is “no one”

Not sure if I can agree with the mixing style and transition statements. I’ve known MANY and have heard others when a DJ mixes horribly including when transitions from one trance to another

You’re dead wrong on number two. People can definitely tell if you’re clashing keys badly. That’s the easiest way to empty out a dance floor.

DJ elitism is a real thing. Vinyl is better bruh nah CDJs nah don't use Sync bro. What about a good set? Song selection is the most important part of any DJ. I'm a DJ and I can only hear another DJs somewhat bad transition if I'm looking for it otherwise I don't even notice most times.

Not mixing songs in key will most definitely kill the vibe. Thats an easy one to avoid.

I can spot a bad transition a mile away

As someone who has djayed almost 5 decades. Mixing in key was never a thing till recently. Now skillful timing and transitions are something i pride myself on to set me part from amateurs. Good music is great but im not a jukebox im a Pro.

But people will see all the flashing lights and moving (digital) parts on screen and think you are a musical Harry Potter! 😅

Sorry but as someone just starting out I was actually paying attention on my last night out. The amount of crap transitions or gaps between tracks was astounding. I think there was only one bar where the DJ was pretty good.
Tho I will say as noob they where ALL better than myself

rubish. if its a good club then id say a good proportion of people will know bad mixing

Thank you. 😊 I think the DJ culture of today performs for other DJ's. It's all about the ART of your craft, not just the science.
