It is a mistake for the director of Fallingwater to reference the original building as a structural failure - no building that stands for over 80 years (long past the lives of its owners and architect that passed in the 1950’s) - and certainly not one constructed so remotely in 1936, above an existing waterfall, and of amazing innovative form and structure. All structures require maintenance and structural upkeep - it is expected and required. I’m happy that the Fallingwater caretakers are responding to its needs and utilizing current structural technologies not available when the building was first completed. Probably the director’s choice of words was a reflection of the common media narrative of Wright from the thirties and of a desire to raise money for this wonderful architectural masterpiece.
