Major stock indexes plunged on Monday as US President Donald Trump showed no sign of backing away from his sweeping tariff plans. It started in Asia, where Hong Kong's Hang Seng has been among the hardest hit, falling 12 percent. We've also seen slides in Taiwan, Japan, China, India and South Korea. It's been a similar story in Europe, where Germany's DAX dropped around 10 percent at the start of trading.

I honestly knew that once markets really grasps that Trump is serious about tariffs, it’s going to hit hard. If the US cuts itself off from global trade, that isolationism is going to send shockwaves

It’s hard to remember that only 10 weeks ago, the American economy was quite good, our foreign relations were on the whole positive, we were on the way to dealing with climate change with subsidies for wind and solar energy,
and we still lived in a democracy. Today, all that is disappearing. -- Robert Reich

"They took our jobs", "They treat us badly", that resembles fascist speech in the 30s, blame foreigners and foreign countries, create an enemy. It's the same recipe.

Stop calling it "reciprocal tariffs" just because that's what Trump calls it. There's nothing reciprocal about them!

The US so called "Reciprocal Tariffs" isn't based on tariffs, but on trade deficits of trade goods without counting the trade value of US services. So even if the EU bends over and reduce all real tariffs to zero, the EU would still have "unacceptable levels of tariffs" based on the nonsensical way in which the Trump administration worked out their "Reciprocal Tariffs".

Without challenging the facts before giving away the farm, the EU would be opening itself up to give away massive concessions that would be close to the same value as the entire US services exports just to balance the trade deficit, simply because the US completely and arbitrarily discounted these numbers from their tariff equation.

Who would have thought that handing the economy to the 6x bankruptcy champion isn't a good idea? 😂

It is a tragedy and so frightening that one old narcissist + many times bankrupt loser can cause a global recession!

There's not much reasoning with Trump by reducing tariffs to 0. He also thinks VAT and food bans are a barrier.
No country will change their VAT policies just because a US president says so.

Try to placate Trump and he'll dream up some new excuse next week. He just wants tariffs. The only way out of this mess is a free trade zone between the EU, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.

In terms of nominal gross domestic product (GDP), the European Union is a larger economy than the United States. The US is overrated, and the EU is grossly underrated. The worst thing that can happen now is that weak and fearful European politicians make a pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago and beg for lower punitive tariffs.

Its truly disturbing that he can just bully everyone into submission with lies…

The big misconception is, that Trump would be happy with "just" 0 % tariffs. The EU would have to lower environmental standards, social standard, cancel all DEI programs and maybe agree to the Mar-a-Lago accord on-top.

It's amazing how quickly the US went from a western democracy to a large version of Iran. From opposing Putin and Russia to gleefully siding with them against allies of 70 plus years. From being a refuge for displaced people to deporting people to camps. I wish my calendar ended on November 3, 2024.
