What's with all the "oh Asian people want to look white" comments? We do not want to look white, it's just that our standards happen to match characteristics white people usually possess. White skin is considered beautiful because in ancient times, only nobles had white skin since they didn't have to work in the sun like peasants did. We had skin whitening treatments long before we knew white people existed, for God's sake. And big eyes aren't just an Asian standard of beauty, that applies to white and black people as well. Yeesh.

Stop bagging on Asian culture for having skin whitening products when we have tanning lotion and spray tans. Beauty is subjective.

I've noticed most people from all over Asia want lighter skin like my mum bought this whitening lotion from Pakistan but I just don't understand it because dark skin is just as beautiful.

IF YOU'RE READING THIS I THINK YOU'RE ALREADY BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE

This world is strange to me, people with light skin want to have darker skin by tanning, and people with dark skin want to have lighter skin. Shit if this is the case why doesn't everyone just start mixed-race families and eventually everyone will have the 'perfect' shade of skin that everyone seems to want.

Whiter skin, in East Asia, is usually associated with better health too. When you become tan, it's because your skin has become damaged, so it produces melanin to try and protect itself, which can not only cause skin cancer and painful burns, but even premature skin aging. Yes, even a "healthy tan" is damage to your skin. Just because it's not red, it doesn't mean it's not damaged.
That being said, it's because East Asian skin tones can actually change drastically. Many East Asians, when they avoid the sun like it's going to murder them, actually are quite pale (with a few exceptions, including Cha Hakyeon), but when frequently exposed to the sun become very tan.
So nowadays, when someone has extremely white skin, they're flaunting "I protect my skin diligently with 10000spf and I will look 20 when I'm 50 and my skin is much less damaged than yours and I won't ever get skin cancer". [and actually, "according to the american cancer society, skin cancer is the most common cancer accounting for nearly half of cancers in the united states. but in sun-vigilant korea, skin cancer doesn't even make the list of the ten most common cancers"]
All of that being said, many East Asians are also very colorist, and automatically make assumptions about how someone treats their skin based off of their skin tone, without really stopping to consider if their skintone is natural. Obviously, some people are naturally very dark, and always will be no matter what sunscreen they use, because their genes are coded to produce a lot of melanin, and there are some people that can spend all the time in the world with no sunscreen and still have milky-white skin. Because genetics. So while it does not at all excuse colorism in any society, I hope that people will understand that there is a reason for such old beauty standards to stick around for so long.

I don't know why people want to tan in America. Browner skin is pretty, and whiter skin is pretty, but what's with the Orange??!

You can't "photoshop" without using the actual application, Photoshop.

You're not "Photoshoping" something if you're not using Adobe Photoshop...

I'm a quarter Japanese. My full Japanese grandmother used to pat my cheek and call me lucky for being so pale, then turn to my significantly more Asian looking and tanner brother and whisper "ganbatte, ganbatte."

When I saw the thumbnail it was clipped and just said "Women Photoshop Themselves With An Asian" and I was like... wait wtf. Then I read "beauty app" and I was like that makes way more sense....

I I had darker skin. I'm not pale but I don't tan well, I burn easily, and skin cancer runs in my family. The half indian girl (does anyone know her name?) has SUCH beautiful skin.

Are they really complaining that it doesn't look like them in the end?
What do you expect from a photo editing app??

Beauty is subjective...i think no matter what skin you got or whether you have small or big eyes, you are beautiful as long as your features match with each other.

I prefer to be pale rather than being tan. I'm not asian. I'm not racist. I don't think tan people would look better pale. I just think it's a better look for me.

It's so annoying how buzzfeed doesn't include the app in the downbar or the recommended.
