Ex-employee says Terry's Turf Club owner told her to 'keep your legs open' during firing

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The owner of an East End burger restaurant is under fire after video of a confrontation between him and an employee he fired was posted online.

Terry Carter, owner of Terry's Turf Club, is accused by the ex-employee, a woman, of saying sexist remarks after firing her. The ex-employee recorded her confrontation with Terry immediately after being fired, saying she did so because she felt uncomfortable.

Evelyn Marie Reid posted a video on Facebook, where it has been shared more than three thousand times in 24 hours. Local 12 has attained a longer video of the confrontation from Reid. According to her Facebook, Reid is a former Senior Airman in the US Air Force.

Reid says that she posted the video because she felt that what her now former boss said to her was sexist and wrong. She says that it was important for her to come forward and that she doesn't want it happening to anyone else.

Reid recounts that she was asked on October 2 to work a double shift on October 7. She says that while working that shift on Sunday, the owner, Terry, approached and fired her.

"Halfway through my shift, Terry came up to me and fired me, without warning and said to me “you’ll be fine, just keep your legs open”. I walked to gather my belonging up a flight of stairs, Terry followed me. He said, “I’ll miss that a**” as he was behind me on the stairs. At that point I got my phone out and started recording him because I was extremely uncomfortable. The video I took was over 3 minutes long where I was asking for some sort of explanation as to why I was fired. Terry refused to give me any explanation other than “it’s just not working out”. He then, again, told me “i don’t have to explain anything to you, keep your legs open” with a smile on his face," said Reid on her Facebook post.

Reid said that before the incident, she had been happily employed by the business on Eastern Avenue since January of 2018.

"I love that job, like I've never gotten a complaint," said Reid.

Reid said that she believes Carter was unhappy with her appearance and took her shift away.

"I recently picked up a second job and so I was pretty exhausted. I hadn't done my make up that day... and he said, 'seeing you here is making me depressed, you're not smiling enough.' and so I said to him, 'how often does all of our other coworkers smile? I'm not 'not' doing my job and you shouldn't take my shifts away from me'," said Reid. "And so I went to bus a table and he came up behind me and he said, he leaned over and he said, 'you're fired. you'll be fine. just keep your legs open.'"

Local 12 has also reached out to Carter, but he said that he is not in a position to comment at this time and referred Local 12 to his lawyers. The restaurant, Terry's Turf Club, is typically closed on Mondays.

Scott Croswell, Carter's lawyer, told Local 12 that he had not had the chance to review the video yet so he didn't feel it was fair to comment yet. Local 12 will check back with Carter and Croswell on Tuesday.
