Warming Up Your Worm Bin In The Winter! Red Wiggler Vermicompost Worm Farm

preview_player
Показать описание
Using rice & a big feeding to heat up your worm bin in the winter helps to keep them actively making natural fertilizer & soil amendments in the form of worm castings. It can be done safely if your worm bin is big enough to have a temperature gradient away from the heat.

In this checkin of my outdoor worm bin I show the various temperatures in different parts of the bin and spread out the feeding after 5 days to help keep the temperature in the appropriate range for my red wiggler compost worms. I run into several warm balls & also find zones without worms in the hottest parts of the worm bin. I also add chick peas or garbanzo beans to the bin to see if, and how fast the worms will turn them into worm castings.

Happy Vermicomposting Everyone!!!🪱🪱🪱

Yep that is hot for worms. It's good to give them space to get out of the way. Rice makes such a pretty mold.

I can see more babies... Wow
Mangoes are best for them

Cool to see the similarities between our outdoor bins. It's much colder here, but the results are relative. Definitely less worms in the cooler exterior areas.
Cheers J&C 🪱🌱🪱

Beautiful worm bed you have going there. Scrap breaking down machines, they will make quick work of those beans.

It's amazing how much difference the temperature is from the center and the outer edges of the bin. Great way to warm up a bin and easy!

Those are some happy worms. Your garden must be so full of nutrients. I haven't researched the science behind worm bins, I didn't think paying attention to the temperature really mattered that much.

So true if one has an outdoor worm bin, can always be sure if anything goes wrong with the indoor bins, u always have a back up of worms. I too love outdoor bins. Great job there at keeping d worms warm.

Good video! I was wondering how to keep a worm bin warm since it started to get cold, but I have small bins. I plan on putting them in the greenhouse instead.

At 03:36 was that steam rising from the hot bed or was it mold spores rising from the disturbed moldy food scraps?

Bag looks great. For some reason outdoor worm systems always - to me - seem healthier and just better overall :)

I'm so glad I found this video. I have my bin in the basement, which isn't heated. I don't think it gets lower than 50 F, but I've been concerned about keeping the bin warm. Rice it is! Do you cook the rice or put in dry?

Maybe you put too much green stuff🤔
Which is causing high nitrogen and that leads to heat.
