A look at the satirical approach to racism taken by King of the Hill. I thought they did a great job of addressing racism throughout the show, while making the characters flawed but still likeable.

Clips used don’t belong to me, if you enjoy King of the Hill I recommend buying the DVDs or watching on Hulu! The clips used are short and used to provide context for review, which is protected under fair use law.

"Is he racist?"
"We don't know yet, he hasn't finished the test."

Dale: "Do your people even celebrate Thanksgiving?"
John Redcorn: "We did. Once."

“Ladybirds biting a white guy! A white guy Peggy!” Made me laugh way more than it should have

Hank was a beautiful portrayal of "ignorant but not hateful."

Dale asking John, "Hey, Do you people even celebrate Thanksgiving?" John replying with, " we did... Once."
Always kills me lmao

I wonder how Hank would manage in the current year. "You say you're a what now, a furry? Is that like a taxidermist?"

One of the best "racism" moments in KotH was when Peggy took the school excursion to Mexico and lost a kid. She got charged in Mexican court with negligence and when things were looking their worst Hank convinced Peggy to testify herself in Spanish. That was such a hilarious and poignant episode.

Bobby: "Why do you have to hate what you don't understand?"
Hank: "I don't hate you Bobby."

Hank: "So, are you Chinese or Japanese?"
Kahn: "We're from Laos. We're Laotian."
Bill: "You're from the ocean???"

The best part of Hank's reaction to Kahn was when he walks up and introduces himself and says "I'm your neighbor and that makes you my friend." That right there is Hank's character in a nutshell.

This, as well as the show's take on sexuality. The episode where Dale's father was discovered to be gay, and the confusion that Dale was upset about it was hilarious; when he actually thought his father was a government agent. In the end, he didn't care at all that he was gay. Which led to one of the funniest lines in the show when his wife asked if he was truly okay with his dad being gay.

"Of course. John Redcorn's gay and we've been friends for years!"

Mike judge is just so good at doing complex satire with simple presentation, the "it's also bad for black people" line from Peggy was brilliant

Kahn: "we Laotian"
Bill: "what ocean?"

One of the most underrated jokes in the series. Bill's family being from New Orleans and knowing creole/French, thinking Kahn said "l'ocean" was way too layered for young me to understand back then

In the first episode with Kahn, Peggy confronts Hank because people will think he's a racist if he hates Kahn. His response is, "Dangit! Since when can I only hate a man if he's white?!"

He didn't show it here, yet I will never forget John Redcorn's reply to "do your people even celebrate Thanksgiving?" "We did. Once." Simply devastating and entirely over Dale's head.

I think one of the great things about Hank and Kahns relationships was near the end of the show kahn walls away insulting Hank in Laotian and Hank is like "yeah yeah i know I'm a boiled ox p****s" like he started to pick up the language and he was tolerant of kahn actively insulting him

Hank's even more tolerant of gay people than one might expect. He defends the gay rodeo as a "real sporting event" and even though he has some uncomfortability, when he finds out Dale's dad is gay his main goal is still to reunite the father and son.

Dale: "He's Japanese..."
Cotton: "NO HE AIN'T..." *looks Kahn up and down* "He's Laotian! Ain't you Mr. Kahn?"
*Kahn visibly shocked*

Fantastic commentary in all of this, but I have to say, the fact the dog loves Hank and seeks to do nothing but de-stress him, including *attacking* sources of stress, is just awesome. That's just cool as hell
