Between the dry-humping and the comical clanging of equipment, this is absolutely hilarious but probably sucked when the 2 enemies engaged in the push of pike

I have a sneaking suspicion that this may be where the part of Rugby known as the 'scrum' comes from. It's very easy to see how men could be trained to operate in this kind of close formation where the end goal is to push your enemy back and gain ground when you turn it into a sport. Only reason the modern scrum looks so different with the shoulder locks is that it's had a few hundred years of refinement from the practice ground origin.

They do this so the dead in the front would still be up right potentially human shielding from more pike trust. It also ensures cohesion and mass, when it all boils down to a pushing match

So the lads at the front are there to act as resistance for their own, then at the final moment they relent and that creates a smashing force?

this doesn't compute in my mind as something that could have possible been used in real warfare. What is the historical source for this?

The push of pike is with the enemy not with your own, for reference look at the illustrations by contemporary artists like Hans Holbein the Younger or Urs Graf, the later even fought in the Italian wars as a pikeman himself.

I don't care about the risks of early firearms and black powder, I will choose cannon crew anyday over this!

Don't you just hate it when the person in the front of the line is just dragging their ass?

Im autistic i have a hyperfixation to history and I've studied military history all my life, I have a fascination with the age of sail and periods ranging from antiquity to up to ww2 (after that i couldn't care a less)

But i can honestly say I've never seen anything like this 😂😂
Is this an actual manouvere?!?!
I can't fathom how it would be beneficial in a battle at all?!
