The Olive tree of Vouves is an olive tree located in the small Cretan town of Ano Vouves in the municipal unit of Kolymvari in Chania.
It is one of the oldest olive trees in the world that still produces olives today. The exact age of the tree cannot be determined yet
tree ring analysis demonstrated the tree to be at least 2000
years old. In 1997, the tree was declared a protected natural monument, 10 years later, the Olive Tree Museum of Vouves was inaugurated in a nearby 19th-century house, displaying the traditional tools and process of olive cultivation. The Olive Tree Museum of Vouves is ideally located next to this special Olive Tree of Vouves, which is visited by over 20,000 people each year from around the world. They are impressed by the tree’s enormous size and the imposing shape of its trunk, which is characterised by unusual twists. Greece has, by far, the highest olive oil consumption in the world, exceeding 24 liters/person/year. This compares versus Spain and Italy at around 14 liters/person/year. Olive trees cover roughly 1/4 of Crete’s surface area. fun fact, branches from this tree were used to weave victors' wreaths for the winners of the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
