A man had otoplasty 4 months ago, but was left with unsatisfactory results — an 8mm difference between both ears. He was advised to get revision surgery and wants to know if this is common practice.

New York oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon Amiya Prasad, M.D. reviews his concerns in this video, explaining factors in otoplasty such as asymmetry, cartilage memory, and healing can affect the outcome, so revision surgery is sometimes needed:

1:15 — Dr. Prasad details his background training in cosmetic oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as his experience performing otoplasty and revision otoplasty surgery

1:51 — Assessing a case and determining which type of otoplasty to perform

2:20 — The advantage of using Mustarde sutures

3:11 — How tissue healing and memory of the cartilage can be a challenge in otoplasty

4:05 — How enhancements and revisions are simply a part of what cosmetic surgeons do

4:57 — Dr. Prasad’s recommendation

I got otoplasty surgery years ago and still cannot sleep on either side comfortably… Even getting my haircut or getting a hug hurts badly. They get infected a few times a month from just sleeping and waking up in pain…. Do you think he pinned them back too tightly and could this ever be corrected since I’ve waited so long…
