I did something very similar to what you've done. I connected a 4 port USB 3.0 hub in the glove box and connected a pair of 2 TB SSD's that I purchased from Costco. This solution cost about $160. Both formatted extended fat. In one of the drives, I created a directory off the root called TeslaCam. On the other drive I copied my CD library ripped to ALAC. So we both have a huge amount of space for Century mode plus a huge amount of space for a music library.

So many “thumb drives” are ssd now a days, zero difference. The temperature range is something that the basic thumb drive won’t provide.
