Hello!
Just searched for it: what you saw in the Egaleo Metro Station is a part of the 'Iera Odos' (the Sacred Way).

In ancient times the Sacred Way connected the city of Athens with Eleusina and the Thriasian Field, where once a year the famous Eleusinian Mysteries were celebrated (there was a Panhellenic Sanctuary). The construction of this road began the 11th century AD (3, 100 years ago) and it is almost identical to the modern road of Iera Odos (you surely have heard it) that stretches from Peiraios Road all the way to Eleusina, with some minor deviations (one of them being what you saw at the Metro Station).

The Eleusinian Mysteries are considered the most famous of the secret religious rites of ancient Greece.

The procession of the ancient Athenians from Athens to Eleusina began at Kerameikos (the ancient Athenian cemetery) and from there the people walked to Eleusina (21Km) along the Sacred Way. The procession was followed by a large crowd of participants and spectators, which, according to Herodotus, reached 30, 000.

The Eleusinian Mysteries were held in honor of goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. According to Greek mythology Persephone got kidnapped by Hades (aka Pluto), the god of the underworld and Demeter (goddess of the harvest and agriculture, presiding over crops, grains, food, and the fertility of the earth and she also appeared as a goddess of health, birth, and marriage) was so sad that no crops could grow on earth. She asked Pluto to give her daughter back, which he declined and instead he proposed that Persephone would live six mounths with her mother and six months in the underworld.

And a small detail of this ancient festival: during the procession from Athens to Eleusina, coarse jokes were told by the pilgrims, according to custom, on a bridge of the Kifissos river (now Kifissos Road). These jokes were symbolic and referred to the nymph Iambe of Eleusis (granddaughter of God Hermes), who with her jokes managed to make Demeter laugh when she was looking for her daughter in sadness.

Regards and thank you both for making this video!

Hi girls
The history lesson for today ...( What a surprise from me 😂😂😂)
You read the sign that said Botsari Street
Actually the street is called Markos Botsaris...
Markos Bousaris was a general of the Greek revolution who died at the age of 33 in the battle of Kefalovryso against the Turks.
Markos Botsaris was considered one of the bravest of the revolution and was respected and famous not only in Greece but also in Europe...
Dozens of Greek and foreign writers and poets have written about him. ( Even an opera with his name !!)
Today a Paris metro station (Botzaris station) is named in his honor.
