The only thing that can save Toyota is the hasty replacement of upper management in Japan. Stevie Wonder has more vision than they do.

I genuinely commend Toyota for making hybrid technology as reliable and ubiquitous as they have among their own brands. However, I've seen no indication that Toyota is making serious investments in battery manufacturing. Toyota wouldn't outsource engine production on the Camry, so the fact that they aren't making their own batteries suggests that they're not serious about all-electric vehicles. By all means, build a strong portfolio lineup, Toyota, but don't be caught with your pants down on all-electric vehicles. P.S. No, Toyota, promising solid-state breakthroughs by 2022 isn't good enough, either. Definitely try, but again -- pants down.
