F-5E Tiger II Best of Aviation Documentary

The Northrop F-5E Tiger II Best of Aviation series documentary is about a lightweight multirole fighter which is an upgraded version of the F-5A Freedom Fighter. Upgrades to the engines, avionics, and structural improvements allow the F-5E to fly faster, carry more fuel and weapons, and have significantly improved sensors. All of this was done while keeping the F-5E an easy to maintain, inexpensive to fly, and highly maneuverable fighter. The F-5E is still in use today as an aggressor or adversary aircraft by the US Navy, and is still operational with over 25 countries. The Tiger II has and continues to make its mark on military aviation.

It's a weapons platform that looks like a weapon. The most fighter jet looking fighter jet ever. Just looks fast!

A pure fighter jet that looks like a pure fighter jet. It still is a very formidable weapons platform.

Old Filipino pilors luv this jet particularly the f5e version. It served our country well in providing air defense and close insurgency operations.

Here in Brazil, our F5s were modernized by Embraer and will be in the front line at least untill 2025.

When I was a kid in the 70's and got my first glimpse of an F-5, it was love at first sight. I thought it was the ultimate design of a fighter jet. That's the plane that got me interested in airplanes and especially fighters. Now I think to myself that if I ever hit a multi million dollar lottery, I'd like to buy me one... demilitarized of course.

This illustrious plane has a fearsome combat record with all that have flown her!! South Vietnamese and later Vietnamese Air Force used them in their counter attack to over throw Pol Pot in Cambodia. Currently 75 F-5Es the Vietnamese Air Force wishes to upgrade them against the rising Chinese aircraft capabilities. The ROC used this beloved plane to maintain air supremacy over the PLA in the air battles over the Taiwan Straits in the 1970s. The Iranian Air Force used their F-5E II to combat Iraqi Air Force MiG 21s Mirage F-1s and MiG 23s with an impressive sortie rate and aerial kills! The Swiss Air Force is relegating their F-5s more to an inexpensive ground attack plane since their venerable Hawker Hunters have been decommissioned. An impressive legacy!!!

April 16, 2020---Was stationed in Panama (72-74) when Northrop brought down their first F-5E for display at Howard AFB. Northrop was looking to sell a bunch of 'em to Central & South American countries. There was a shit lot of brass around the planes that day. Was just getting into model building at the time so I took a bunch of photos of everything I could. Think I shot 2 rolls of 36 exposures each. There was to be a flight demonstration but because of low clouds, it wasn't done.

F5E-Tiger II and newer iterations - are still great aircraft. Looking forward to your F-20 Tigershark episode !!!

I did the wind tunnel work from 1979 till it ended. I know that I’m biased about it but it was a great fighter that will only get better with time

Great video! I used to study at a technical institute near the Republic of Singapore Air Force's Paya Lebar Airbase (PLAB) back in the early 90's. Our institute was located right where the aircraft made their final turn to land on the runway. I'll never forget the distinctive high-pitched (somewhat "leaky" sounding) whistle / hiss of those J85 engines. But whenever a pilot decided to throttle up while passing overhead, that was it. Our trainers just gave up trying to talk over the deafening shrieking roar! LOL!
Did you know that Singapore locally upgraded her F-5s so significantly that the RSAF felt they deserved a totally new designation? Thus the F-5S and F-5T (2-seater variant) came into being. The upgrades ranged from a new BVR radar, glass cockpit (2 MFDs), high speed databus, HOTAS, in-flight refueling probe and even a redesigned and enlarged LERX (Leading Edge Root Extension) for enhanced maneuverability and high AOA performance!
Keep up the good work with your excellent videos!

Rarely seen such a professional looking vid...except on this channel. It looks like Discovery Channel back in the days when it was a nice station. Keep up the great work!

And as good as the F-5Es are, the F-5G (re-designated F-20 Tigershark) was quite a slick, powerful jet but very similar to the performance of an F-16 Viper. A real shame our allies couldn't have used it as a more cost effective alternative to F-16s or the newer F-35s.
