Molecular and synthetic biology have made better tools for the understanding of our bodies, the treatment of human diseases, the production of our food sources, and the engineering of life on Earth. How can we transform and implement these methods in the preparation for our species’s necessary voyage to space within and beyond our solar system? What moral and scientific barriers must we overcome to augment human capacity for space travel? In considering the limitations of our species’s abilities and the environmental situations we might expect to find in space, why and how should we use synthetic biology to aid our forays into the rest of the universe?

Lisa Nip is a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab and uses her training in biochemistry and biotechnology to translate synthetic biology into real-world applications. She spends much of her time concocting biological solutions to long-duration space travel and works to make them a reality.

This talk is really pushing the boundaries of what we consider as life, biased by our Earthy experience. It is one of the few that are actually talking about crafting a Martian bio-sphere, instead of creating an earth-like bubble on Mars. Great presentation with concrete examples of how synthetic biology can be leveraged to engineer a true Martian human. Highly recommended for anyone interested in space and/or biology.

I’m so happy to find this talk to watch. Great presentation, amazing topic and its spincreeibly fascinating. I’m currently studying biomedical sciences and have always had a huge fascination with space, and have recently wondered about the possibilities of synthetic biology and space travel together myself. This kind of engineering of species and/or augmentation of current organisms to accomplish or allow some task to be done is exactly the kind of work i hope to do post graduation.

I think we should not limit ourselves to spread seeds over to Mars but rather to each planet in our solar system. Surely whichever planet will outpace to each other than to relies on a single planet.
