How to Play Death Sludge Like Primitive Man - My Will

Gear Used for this lesson:
First Act Custom Shop DC-6
'74 Gen 1 Sunn O))) Model T
Two Notes CAB M+

G#-Standard Tuning: G#-C#-F#-B-D#-G#
Stringjoy Custom Strings: 16-74
__________

Not a standard power chord in sight for this pummeling tune of dissonant riffs and hatred!

Primitive Man tunes down 4 full steps, or 8 semitones. I've strung up with a set of 16-74 strings for this tuning (I believe Ethan uses 17-74).

My Will doesn't really have a key and is full of dissonant sounding Root-6th (R6) dyads.

I just KNEW Primitive Man would show up here eventually. One of, if not THE, heaviest band in existence.

That Acid Rain pedal does get you close to the sound.

Ethan of Primitive Man told me that he just uses amp distortion with no pedals boosting it. He puts his modulation and delay pedals straight into the front of the amps.

I know he was using an Orange Thunderverb and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec in the early days of Primitive Man but I think he's now using Dean Costello Amps

I’m so glad Primitive Man made it up to Vermont this summer. Easily the best show that came to town this year.

You should do a Khanate lesson one day! It'll probably be hard with all the silence between riffs, but a cool challenge!

Wild, love this one! Killer video. I managed to catch Primitive Man in Toronto over the summer and my ears are still recovering from the awesomeness. Love their heaviness and how they are able to smartly add in some harsh noise elements. Thanks for posting this!

That opening riff sounds so disgusting and filthy! I love it! It's like a mix of slam and black metal! Brutal as all hell!

Would you consider doing a gear tour? You have the perfect stuff, would love an all in one video.

When I saw "Death Sludge" in the title I immediately thought of Rippikoulu.. Brutal tones by the way. I like your channel because it helps me discover awesome groups in the doom/sludge/stoner genres that I haven't heard of.

I love Primitive Man! Still need to see them live. I saw Vermin Womb which is Ethan's grind band with Full Of Hell, Blood Incantation, Mortous, and God Is War.

Primitive Man will rattle your fillings out live. Definitely check out a Lifer pedal from Fowl Sounds sometime, Steve!

My trem picking went way up once I used the Eric Johnson jazz 3s, ideal in every way. Bomb vid as always Steve, PM fucks live

Oh man, didn't expect this one to drop. Sick! On a sidenote, Primitive Man was probably the loudest, heaviest band I've ever seen live, aside Sunn. Just absolutely insane shit.
Also cool to see you tackle tremolo picking. I've been trying to get better at it myself for a time now and I'm slowly making progress. I've become rather fond of Dunlop Flow Picks (the 1.5mm one in particular), or the Dava Delrin Grip Picks for trem picking and general playing. I feel like you're generally better off with a Jazz style pick at any rate.

Thanks for doing this one. Big Primitive Man fan. Would appreciate a lesson on their song Victim. That’s definitely my favorite of theirs
