Mexico is marking 500 years since the first Europeans arrived to settle on the American mainland.
The events have been overshadowed by a diplomatic spat between Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and King Felipe VI of Spain.
Obrador has refused to attend after demanding an apology from Spain for colonising his country.
Al Jazeera's Manuel Rapalo reports from the city of Veracruz.

I am Mexica descendant of the Nahua people and they had to travel all the way to Coahuila and that’s when my great great grandmother Guadalupe made it to the states and her mother returned to Vera Cruz years later and passed there. That is home of my grandmas, great grandpas and great great grandmothers etc. are from. I am so honored to know we are mexica medicine women. It’s hard to explain, but it only appears in certain women each generation.

😊The Spaniards were conquered by the Arabs and Moors from 711 to 1492

Enslavement of the native people was largely forbidden. And there is no need for reconciliation, because we are not at war. The conmemoration is that of the arrival of Spaniards, not that of the conquest. You got everything wrong.
