My God. A guy who doesn’t spend 15 min on a video when it can be done in 2. Thank you, sir.

Quick note that the smaller 2.5ah 40v batteries still use the same 18650 cells that the older LXT lineup use. You need to use the 4.0ah 21700 based batteries to really see the performance gains.

Suggestion to Makita: 40v X 2 chainsaw (50cc equivalent), hedge trimmer, hole digger (auger), lawn mower, and blower.

I just bought the Makita 6-tool XGT 40V combo. It will be replacing some LXT and some corded tools. The rotary hammer is a new tool for me.

They all have a lot more grunt than their 18V versions without any doubt. But are they better tools?

BATTERIES – wow, these are almost twice as big as 5ah LXT, and a lot heavier. The supplied 4ah battery on the impact driver is comical. From their marketing I thought they had some rubber mouldings on corners to absorb shocks, but they have none.

CHARGER – great, and the included LXT battery adapter is also great.

HAMMER DRILL – Smaller and lighter than the high-end LXT drill. Changing ring from hammer > drill > screw is not as smooth or positive as the LXT drill, very clunky and stops all over the place. Gone are the manual gears from 1-21 which were super easy to use, and now there is a better 40+ step gear system but it's slow and fiddly electronic push button thing. For delicate jobs it should be better than the impact driver if you use it properly.

IMPACT DRIVER - smaller than the LXT, electronic controls, but I REALLY hate the cheap clear plastic moulding behind to collet. I'm sure it will break on the first drop.

GRINDER - comes with a short crap spanner. A weird thin rubber o-ring sits under the guard, and can't see what's the point of it, and can't see it last. Very thin and it will get a lot of crap and abuse.

RECIPROCATING SAW - has a dodgy 1-2 speed selector. I hope it is just broken and Makita will replace the tool. The LXT version has the same switch and is very positive, unlike the one on the XGT.

ROTARY HAMMER - cheap plastic chuck. The supplied handle acts as a shock absorber but, is 100% plastic and feels cheap. The hammer drill above comes with a far superior handle. The stop guide might be too short.

CIRCULAR SAW - I only had an old corded one, and this looks better. Doesn’t even come with a rip guide!!

My conclusion is that power wise these new tools are on par to other 36v tools but I have reservations about their heavy duty claim as they seem a tad lower quality than the usual Makita tools I previously owned.

Makita seems to have made some weird cost saving decisions on this supposedly premium system. I’m not sure I regret my purchase yet but I’m not particularly thrilled.

I just hope that at least they release some 40vx2 garden range so that I can get rid of my Stihl and use these batteries for everything.

Tim, the question I really want to know is who can drive in a 150mm batten screw faster, makita 40v vs milwaukee m18 gen 3.

The only achievement they made was moving a few pieces of wiring. Now instead of 5 cells in series, there are 10... Yayyy! Less weight tho.

Im waiting for makita compact 18v rivet gun, heat gun, and higher battery capacity. But they come up with this new 40v range instead of more 18v developments. That’s it. Im switching to milwaukee slowly

Where can you buy the 4.0ah xgt battery? I’ve had the purple xgt impact for two months now and no battery still...

Are these going to be available for purchase in the US? I don’t need that much power but it’s always a good feeling to know you have the capability.

1:01 is the 40v impact wrench 😲. Never seen it apart from the promo pics by makita. What is the difference in torque between this and 18v version?

Is there a disadvantage here? Like do they not last as long?
