The Fangame That Wasn't a Virus

Five Nights at Freddy's: Running in the 80s was released on Gamejolt to substantial acclaim. However, a few weeks later, the game was GONE. It had been removed from GameJolt as if it never existed.

This is the story of how the FNAF fangame community convinced a dev that there was malware in their when there wasn't.

The animatronic models and animation look great and fit in really nicely with the camera renders; I honestly feel it's up there with Five Nights at Candy's, POPGOES, and other flagship fangames. It actually reminded me a lot of FNAC for some reason; maybe because of the gameplay shift on the final night? Let me know what you think!

Please follow @theresnosteak and HackGame; I'm sure they'd really appreciate it, especially after everything they went through:

This one was a real wild ride. It just goes to show you - if people hear something enough times, they'll believe it's true, even if it isn't. The _games own developers_ were convinced that their game somehow had malware in it despite _knowing_ that they didn't include any! That's nuts!

While _Five Nights at Freddy's: Running in the 80s_ is rather easy to find, the developer doesn't endorse the reupload, and thus I won't be linking it here. If you really want to play it, it's not that hard to find. As for why she hasn't reuploaded it, I get the sense that there were a lot of reasons, some of which were private/interpersonal. That said, TheresNoSteak _did_ explain to me that she wasn't happy with the game, felt she could do even better, and is working on an enhanced remake now. I think she want to release that as the definitive version.

An enahnced remake of _RIT80s_ sounds awesome, but I must disagree with her on one front: *_Running in the 80s_** is an excellent game, and everyone who worked on it ought to be really proud of it. I would be SO proud if I made a game half that good.* If TheresNoSteak is unhappy with the original _RIT80, _ I suspect she's holding herself to some _insane_ standards, because it's honestly among the best FNAF fangames I've ever played. Easily top 10.

Thanks so much for watching!

I am actually friends with the creator of Running in the 80s and I know how much work went into that game and it was really heartbreaking to see all the work go to waste due to this situation, plus the amount of stress that they dealt with hurt a lot to watch. I'm glad you made this video to bring more light to this situation and tell the actual story.

I guess Glitchtrap snuck into the game files for…reasons still unknown…

I never thought of a game having a virus built into it. It puts things into a whole new perspective how something can be dangerous without you expecting it.

Kinda baffling that nobody ran it through a virus check software like VirusTotal in the first place. Thats my first instinct whenever I download fan games. Just goes to show how much impact a rumor has on peoples immediate decision about stuff like this

I played through the whole game but I didnt have any problems or even hear it "had" a virus. And it was a very good game.

You know, I've always wondered about source taking in all my years of being educated. All the teachers ever wanted was the link to whatever you went to, and not even verify through the oldest or primary sources that something was accurate. Heck, we're given random links that we just trust from the teachers because it's from them! This is why I love MatPat, he really dives deep and spends a lot of effort studying these things. Unfortunately, if it's on YouTube, it's not to be trusted, so a lot of adults, parents and teachers alike, will trust a link with easily typeable text rather than a video that might take weeks to make.

This reminds me of when my church decided to warn all of the kids about Momo "texting you to steal your dad's gun" and other nonsense. In less then a minute I had googled the whole thing and found it to be just the weird bird statue from Japan.

Although this is a serious situation, this is the most absurd thing to ever happen.

It's sad a case of mass hysteria ruined an innocent fan games reputation.

Edit: no, there actually isn't
At least with gamejolt.

> We've also ~~forgotten~~ overtly ignored that there's a blanket degree of safety from Gamejolt and other platforms checking the uploads from devs for viruses before allowing them to be published

I myself am making a fan game, so I will triple check my code. Thanks for warning me. Even if it doesn't join the fanverse, you've warned me to make sure something like that doesn't happen. Thank you, theft king.

That is quite the unfortunate circumstance of events for both the fandom and the developers. The only thing I don’t get or questioned. If everything is all clear up now and we know it’s a false alarm.

Why DON’T the devs just put the OG game back up?…like fr, there’s no reason to not to just keep it under wraps now. It’s should be as simple as snapping your fingers. No need to keep a perfectly working game you put all your soul into away from the public.

It's sad how such a good fan game with sick 80's beats can be removed and called a virus, just from using an updated version of clicks team (in the stream love the content!)[can you explain what the glitched atraction is about]

Very interesting topic, liked the video! It is sad that poor developers had to go through all that and the result was basically their game getting bad rep forever, their fun project, be it me I would be pretty devastated and probably would not make another game for at least some time after such experience, idk.
Also this is unfortunately a pretty common tactic. Misleading and scaring people to just offer a paid app that will "solve all these highly dangerous issues". As a security specialist I see it daily.

It's unfortunate that you have to take a huge risk that can cost you your own money, documents and identity just to play a fangame
