In 1942, young Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara) lands her dream job -- secretary to Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) at the peak of his power. Three years later, Hitler's empire is now his underground bunker. The real-life Traudl narrates Hitler's final days as he rages against imagined betrayers and barks orders to phantom armies, while his mistress, Eva Braun (Juliane Köhler), clucks over his emotional distance, and other infamous Nazis prepare for the end.

Imagine being a dictator of a country and the first thing you receive on your birthday is enemy artillery fire.

That line "Nobody told me, I had to ask" always stood out to me because as the war went on and things got worse for the Germans Hitler would sack his generals for not listening to him, even after they told him his plans made no sense.

A few years earlier, late 41, Stalin was in a similar position with the German invaders only a few miles from Moscow. It's amazing how the tide turned so dramatically

"They should hang the entire Luftwaffe leadership" is an actual quote of Hitler.
Although Hitler said this to Koller under different circumstances. It was actually the day after Hitlers birthday when Koller told Hitler that the Luftwaffe is basically dead and cannot fight any more.

The movie did this quiet a few times where historic quotes were used in different scenes.
During Hitlers rant in the movie he said "Im not gonna leave Berlin, ill rather put a bullet in my head". This is also an actual quote of Hitler, but he said his in a much more relaxed situation to his superiors.

It speaks a lot to his state at this stage in the war. Hitler originally believes that the Russians have a railway gun on the Oder and is then told by Koller that it is much smaller calibre. Krebs attempts to defuse Hitler by agreeing with his belief that it's railway-gun fire but in less than a minute Hitler has changed his mind and declares this 'nonesense'. This movie is full of subtle details and something like this at the very beginning helps a viewer who knows nothing to understand the frustrations of his generals.

Starting the artillery bombardment of Berlin on his birthday is a real power move ngl. I think the Allies also sent in a huge bombing raid to celebrate.

“On the Fürher‘s birthday, a barrage of Katyusha rockets will tear Berlin to pieces! With your bullets, with your bayonets, with your bare hands! Do the same to their retched soldiers!”

Reminds me of some doctors I have worked with that were temperamental, mean and a pain to be around. Not told because nobody wanted to be blasted by their wrath or blamed for circumstances they had no control over.

The communications were breaking down so bad, but the phone system stayed up and running, the military was calling civilians's homes to see where the Russians were, in some cases the Russians would answer the phone.

I like to Think Koller is saying to himself” this shitshow is almost over just say at the gamepark and don’t do anything to get executed by the SS.”
