One of the most heard statements we encounter as coaches is, "I've never told this to anyone before." And that's invaluable. Coaches essentially act as space holders. We define a space and begin to navigate within it. And we open doors in the individual's inner world that have never been opened. We press the buttons. Lights come on. Sometimes, it becomes a foggy room. We open a window to facilitate a clearer view. Sometimes, during coaching, one enters a room and realizes there's a need for rest, and they rest and are listened to. Sometimes, they may need to enter a room where they need to shout, and they can raise their voice there. Sometimes, we find them in a room, wearing an identity they shouldn't wear, and then we help them adopt the identity they should genuinely have at that moment. And we voice them, indeed, giving voice to the unsaid, addressing the previously unspoken, and perhaps becoming vulnerable in a trusted space within trusted boundaries... That's what coaching is all about.
