About COPPA

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (in short COPPA) is a US law from 2000 that is set to protect the personal information of children under 13 years old. However, only in 2019, the agreement between YouTube and the US Federal Trade was reached as a result of which some important changes were made to YouTube policies.

YouTube COPPA Changes

When you change YouTube's 'Made for kids' setting to YES the following 3 things change:
1) No personalized advertisements get displayed before, during or after your video. This will get potentially get you lower revenues.
2) Commenting on your video is no longer possible.
3) The cards and end screens features are not available for this video. This means you cannot link to external sites.

What happens to your channel if you change settings to “Made for kids”

1) No stories
2) No community tab
3) No notifications
4) No channel membership

If you don't change your settings, YouTube will set them with algorithms. Basically, it will be guessing whether your videos are made for children or not. If they guess incorrectly, there will be no monetization and no comments for your channel. Therefore, it’s important to set setting correctly so that your videos don't get penalized.

What does Made for Kids mean?

Made for kids - videos where the main audience are children of the age of under 13 or videos that also target this group. To be more precise “made for kids” counts if you:
1) make videos where the subject directly targets children (tutorials for preschooler e.g.),
2) make videos which include children as actors,
3) your videos include toys or cartoon animated figures that generally appeal to children,
4) language of the video is specially made for kids,
5) video includes activities that are especially targeted toward children like early education songs or games for children.

How to set your video's audience

As a YouTube creator, you are required to set future and existing videos as made for kids or not. If you choose not to select a channel setting, you’ll be required to identify each video on your channel that’s made for kids. If you choose this option, you’ll need to set each existing and future video as made for kids or not. To set the audience on a video level you need to follow 6 steps:

2. On the left menu, click Settings.
3. Click Channel.
4. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
5. Under Audience, select:
a) “Yes, set this channel as made for kids. I always upload content that’s made for kids.”
b) “No, set this channel as not made for kids. I never upload content that’s made for kids.”
c) “I want to review this setting for every video.”
6. Click Save.

I don't make children videos but this is honestly not fair!
This is what happens when some people make bad choices, it ruins it for everyone!

So it’s our fault that parents can’t watch their kids...

It's weird, Google were pulling the data of child users on YouTube and the producers get punished.

Hey appreciate this video, love what your doing tubics here on youtube keep the videos coming. Honestly, I know other people have been complaining about this new made for kids settings on youtube.. I agree it is a pain when it comes to monitization and having comments being removed on your videos. I wish youtube could go back to the way that it was several years ago and we could make our pages customizable kind of like how we could on social media sites like myspace. We used to have the ability to change our background color and even upload images of whatever we wanted and set those to our background. It seems as time went on the less freedoms and options we have been given. This is what happens when companies become more corporate, the end user has less options. :(

I thought there would be a huge repercussion if I had selected "No, it's not made for kids" but honestly, it seems it's the way to go! Thank you!😃👍

for those who are making children content, don't be discouraged you can do it keep going, I just got monetized, it's a lot of work but don't be discouraged, Monetization is just the first step, but allow your passion to lead you and keep uploading interesting content and your channel will grow. Please DONT GIVE UP.

What is the point of changing to “made for kids” when you want to make money there. I think I should change it back to normal.

I’ve set ALL my videos to ‘Not for kids’, because of my devices, I can’t do it on a channel level, but I’m still being told that’s not good enough

Thank you so much for this tip. I thought my channel was already set up for "not made for kids" but I was wrong. Wish I had known this years ago. It will be interesting to see what happens now that I fixed it. Wish me luck everyone and if I notice a huge difference I will come back and let you know. UPDATE FROM WHEN I WROTE THIS A YEAR AGO. Ever since this happened I am just finding out now that most all my subscribers are not able to get notifications. Right now this very minute my subscribers are getting a message telling them 'my channel is made for kids' and it in fact is not. This makes it so they can not click "all notifications" while being subscribed to me. See if you are having the same issue. This entire issue came to light when they started the entire (for kids) and (not for kids) and I am just finding out NOW why my views went down CONSIDERABLY!!!. I have over 114, 000 subscribers and when I post a video only 200 or 300 people will see it. Most are not even my subscribers. Now there is a fix but it has to be done by every individual separately. If I tell the person to unsubscribe from me and then resubscribe they will then have the ability to click "all notifications". Problem is I have no way to reach out to all of my subscribers and tell them this. I am currently working with YT to fix this. They are now aware it is happening and said they will get back to me when they figure it out. I will try my best to keep everyone up to date. Has anyone else seen this happen to their channel as well. It might be happening and you don't even know it.

Damn this is so trippy. So “Made for kids” doesn’t actually mean that your videos are kid friendly, it means that all your content is literally only for kids. smh YouTube needs to be more clear with these things

So... if i add a rap song in a video, play an M rated game like CoD, R6S, Fallout, GTA, or any game with killing people, or say the F word and get into trouble with the FTC?
