The Ukrainian refugees risking their lives by returning home - BBC News

Millions of Ukrainians fled their country after Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

Now many are returning to their homes in the east of the country, close to frontline fighting, against official advice.

Many say they are homesick and are returning with their children to rebuild their lives, despite the continuing threat of attack by Russian forces.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by James Waterhouse, who travelled with returning refugees to the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.

I was also a refugee with two kids and i fully understand that woman's decision. We stayed in Poland for 10 months ( we'll never forget the kindness of polish people), while my husband and elder son were in Ukraine. What a happy event it was when we came back home! I remember the words of my granny who had a newborn baby in 1944 when Germans occupied her village:" I will not live my home. If it's time for us to die, we'll die here, at home". It's just my decision and my point of view, i don't push anyone to come back home. Thank you all guys for your support

Come home... It isn't as bad as many expected it to be.. families need to be together it's that simple we are stronger that way.. soldiers have everything to fight for when they know their sons and daughters and wives or girlfriends are at home.. when soldiers know that their families are safe they don't fight as hard, however. Russia lost this war when we destroyed their regular military.. Ukraine will see it's victory day and we will all dine. Let them go home.. like I said at the beginning, families need to be together. Glory to Ukraine 🔱 glory to the heroes.. everything is Ukraine 🇺🇦

People make their choices. In this case the women took their children to safety and the men stayed to defend and support their country.
If some of the women and children return, it's their choice and best of luck to them.

As a Muslim myself what is about to say may offend the Muslims but this so the difference between European refugees and non-European refugees in the West. The Eastern European will fight to get their country back.. while the Syrians, Libyans, Moroccans, Tunisian, Indians, Afghanistan have been so comfortable
In European countries that they will not go back. So in this case the love of the country is stronger by the Europeans.

I think there are 3 other reasons, one refugee status, two visas, and 3 benefits. In the end it was cheaper to come home because they couldn't support themselves earning Ukrainian salaries and paying european prices.
