Maybe if they went about it the right way and weren’t already living together and having sex, a marriage proposal would actually mean something. But, no, he sets up a “will you marry me” sign in the house where they already living together, and she’s not phased because he’s already shown his hand and it’s all just boring half effort stuff until she decides he’s not worth it and moves on to be with someone who’s chivalrous, romantic, has boundaries and will respect her boundaries too

This is called "real life." Things don't work the way they do in TV, movies, or jewelry commercials. Over half my life ago (I'm 55), I got my girlfriend a bracelet for Christmas. She kept bugging me to tell her what I got her. I said, "A romance novel, " and stuck to that from Thanksgiving on.

Then I got an idea! I actually bought a romance novel, glued the pages together except for two, and cut an oval out of a couple hundred pages. Then I glued red velvet into the hole, and used safety pins to secure the bracelet to the velvet.

Christmas arrived, she opened the wrapping paper, annnnd... she got very annoyed and just chucked it onto the coffee table. I asked her if she even wanted to open the book? No. I suggested she might like to open it. No. I asked her nicely to open it. No.

... I'm not sure why we didn't stay together...

Unpopular opinion:
That’s what happens when you do things backwards.
You are NOT supposed to live with her until you marry her.
She is so unexcited because she’s used to a life with you that your proposal is now meaningless.
What are you proposing? That things get serious by signing a paper? Does this mean all of this time has been testing if she is the right one? Or if things don’t work out she is disposable?
Maybe this has been in her mind the whole time.
The same thing goes the other way. If you would have set boundaries for yourself then a proposal of a life lived together is an exciting proposal!
