It’s true that God will render unto every man according to his works, the problem is that there is no one who does good, not even one. It’s true that God will give eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality, the problem is that there is no one who seeks after God. Jon and Justin Discuss the early chapters of the book of Romans, and offer some comforting clarity on this group of passages.

Awesome guys! We are saved for good works, not by good works.

Thank you for reposting this archived shortened version. I obviously listened to the long version a while ago but didn't completely get it. After listening to this I literally feel like scales have come off my eyes. The Romans 2:6-11 and Romans 8: 4 have always been a splinter in the back of my mind but now its gone. When I can see that Paul in Romans is not schizophrenic, then I know that God is not schizophrenic and this leads me to healthy theological thinking. I cannot overestimate the power for evil or good that lies in biblical hermeneutics. What you gentlemen did by properly contextualizing the related scriptures was to actually liberate my understanding, enhance my joy and increase my faith. Even within the reformed camp the ability to communicate that biblical words need to be understood in context is being lost. It is one thing to declare that context is king, but another thing to actually implement it. We all know the saying that it is easy to lose the forest for the trees . When we emphasize word studies and sentence understanding to the exclusion of the authors train of contextual thought within a book (such as Romans) our theological bearings get disoriented. In other words it is important to get a detailed understanding of the specific trees in the forest but if you wind up focusing too much on one tree you may forget that it is part of a larger forest system. Reformed theology does an excellent job looking at the forest, however it sometimes neglects the observation of individual trees. You guys have not done that, I can see both the forest and the trees now. Thank you so much. There is an art and science to biblical hermeneutics and this particular podcast demonstrates how to excel at it. Sola Deo Gloria

Thank you, my brothers, for what you do, two, to focus on the finished work of Christ, to focus on our Lord and Savior and our only redeemer, Jesus Christ! I am not righteous, and I thank God for living the life I couldn’t!!!! GLORY TO GOD!

Yes! This is so prevalent in beg Eva, and the So Bapt crowd (my first hand experience).

If I may quote Yoda, “there is no try, only do or do not.”

I sometimes think that some of the confusion stems from the chapter and verse breaks that were introduced. I understand their purpose, but sometimes they seem arbitrary and even distracting as they introduce unnatural breaks in thought.

Swiss theologian Frédéric Louis Godet wrote of Romans, “The probability is that every great spiritual revival in the Church will be connected as cause and effect with a deeper understanding of this book.

To not understand the first things. Is to not be able to arrive at the correct ends, salvation by faith alone.

Thank you. An excellent explanation of Romans 2. I would like to add that at the end of your video, you pointed out that the Lord Jesus Christ was the perfect doer of the law for His people and earned eternal life for them. His people are chosen from eternity to receive the free gift of eternal life on the basis of His perfect obedience for them and His sacrificial death to pay for their sins. When we trust in Christ alone and in His work to save us, we are declared righteous and are united to Him so His righteousness becomes ours as well. Please recognize that we are all sinners and need to trust in Christ alone as we cannot in ourselves perfectly keep God's Law. ( And that is not ceremonial laws but specifically the 10 Commandments or love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.)

1 John 1:6-8 is pretty clear. "...If we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, then we have fellowship with on another and the blood of His Son cleanses us from all sin..."

David wrote that he had never seen the RIGHTEOUS forsaken in one place and then wrote later that there is NONE RIGHTEOUS. How is this to be reconciled?

If all Paul is trying to do is "crush people with the law, " why include Rom. 2:7? Your interpretation makes no sense of this whole verse. I think your issue is you are seeing 2:5-16 in the same context as 3:10. The former is a future judgement, the later is what is presently true. The law of non-contradiction you are trying to use does not apply.

I’ll admit I’m a bit confused. I understand if my works could actually save me, then I would stand condemned from my works of iniquity. Sola fide, I get it! But if John MacArthur saw this video, I don’t think he would disagree. Same with Doug Wilson, yet you said he should repent of his false teachings from the whole FV fiasco. Your message is solid and full of truth, but could you try to have a dialogue with some of these big named people before speaking against there teachings. It would be more healthy to understand what a person is really trying to say. It does not seem to be your intention to misrepresent anyone, but it is possible you are. That simple possibility should be enough to make you consider what I am trying to say. It’s important to call out false teaching, I get it, but we need to be 100% certain and the only way is through an attempt at real dialogue in these cases.

Romans 2:6-11 Are there not those that are believing in works righteousness and those that are believing in the righteousness of Christ for salvation and life, whether Jews or gentile in view? Is Paul giving law or pointing to life under the law that leads to death and new life by faith that renders eternal life? We understand that the new life is a life yoked to Christ and His good works that we are really participants.
To those saved by Grace through faith we receive and yet we only receive by placing our hopes in the good and finished work of Christ alone. But for those under the law they are rendered what their works earned, and to those given new life in Christ, are transformed and somehow are able to receive rewards by doing good?
Romans 2:6-11

He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality.

the law keeper and the law breaker, in Christ Jesus we kept the law as though we perfectly obedient.
But after we've been saved like that, can we still be a law breaker and not law keeper and still be saved?
This delusion is real, but why Theocast never address this issue?

I'm sorry guys, but this is not right. Paul is not just trying to crush us in Romans 2. He is telling us the same thing regarding the judgment that Jesus taught. There is no tension between Romans 2 and Romans 3, because in Romans 2 Paul is talking about good works of faithful, loving, reverent obedience to God. Good works of love for neighbor. That plays a role in the future judgment, as Paul explicitly says in Romans 2 and as Jesus explicitly taught.

But in Romans 3 Paul is talking about the "works of the Law". As in, things in the Mosaic Law that only a Jew or a proselyte would know about. Things like circumcision and food laws. The things the Jewish Christians wanted to impose on the gentiles in Acts 15. THAT IS THE CONTEXT IN ROMANS AND GALATIANS.

Paul's point to the Jews in Rome is that being Jewish and circumcised is not going to count for anything on the day of judgment. What counts is faith WORKING through love. Or as Paul says in 1 Cor 7, circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is KEEPING GOD'S COMMANDMENTS.

Notice the distinction Paul makes there between circumcision (a work of the Mosaic Law) and the commandments of God (the sort of stuff he's talking about in Romans 2.

God please help someone to open their eyes and see it help us out of this awful mess. 😫🙏

For real, why don't you read chapter 2 a little slower.
Our good works walking in the Spirit are pleasing to our Lord.
It truly is sad that people don't rightly divide.
Eternal life is free and predetermined for the elect, you can't loose eternal life.
But how naive to think that our obedience does not matter. Romans 81-4
I am not talking about law, I am talking obedience to the Word.
Calvin was wrong, we in the Spirit, are able to please God, you really think that means, what?
You two are awesome trying to free people from the Lordship BS, but, you are mistaken, we don't earn eternal life, but, we absolutely can please our Father by abiding in Christ. Walking in the Spirit.
We can please Him if we walk not after the flesh....
Don't you realize that the Word is key and there are many believers who are not abiding that we, who know the Truth, should restore gently.
I have rested in Christ for decades, backslidden and out of fellowship for years at a time so don't act like I'm pushing law, I am saying obedience pleases God if we are His

Once again, you all believe Calvin's misinterpretations. In Romans 3:10-18 Paul is pulling from Psalm 14 & 53 of what the FOOL says & does. Were your feet swift to shed blood?

Calvinists: "Man is so totally depraved he can't & won't seek God he is unwilling & incapable" You teach a fatalism "Just live your life & if you're one of the elect someday you will hear a salvific message & POOF... you will be Irresistibly Regenerated.

Scripture: You were born when where you were born to seek God (Acts 17:26-31).
