In sentence 6. над диваном висит его портрет, диван is in the instrumental case as it follows the preposition над. The verb used here is the imperfective висеть which has no perfective pair.

In sentence 4. они припарковались у парка, we are using the perfective verb припарковаться (=to park oneself) from the imperfective/perfective pair

In sentence 2. увидимся на пляже (=we will see each other on the beach), the sentence uses the perfective reflexive verb увидеться (this is why it is the future tense that is expressed) from the imperfective/perfective pair видеться/увидеться.

In sentence 5. всё должно остаться между нами, the verb остаться is the perfective one from the pair оставаться/остаться. We are here interested in the result that is why we use the perfective verb.

In sentence 3. по пятницам мы ходим в клуб, пятницa (=Friday) is in its the dative plural form (пятницам). клуб after the preposition в is in the accusative case as there is movement in this sentence (ходить = to go on foot, but multidirectional)

Today we are going to learn some prepositions. We are going to put them in context, and to see how we use them in Russian language.


Most common prepositions are:

In
В
[ve/f- depending if next word starts with voice or unvoiced consonant]
Pronounced “ve” if next word starts with a voiced consonant; “f” if next word starts with unvoiced consonant]


НА[Na]= On

ПО[Pa]= Along/On depending on the context.


У[oo]= At/By


МЕЖДУ[Myezhdu]= Between


НАД[Nat]= Above.

Some of these prepositions have different meanings. We will see in context how to use them.

I live in Moscow.
 Я живу в Москве.
YA zhivu ve Maskve.

We are going by transport to St. Petersburg.
Мы едем в Питер.

The chairs are standing by/near the table.
LIT: By the table are standing the chairs.

Oo stala stayat stul'ya.

They parked by/near the park.
Они припарковались у парка.

МЕЖДУ[Myezhdu]= Between

♦
There is nothing between them. [They are not romantically involved]
LIT: Between them there is nothing.
Между ними ничего нет.
Myezhdu nimi neecheevo nyet.

BASICALLY: There is a wardrobe between the sofa and the table.
LIT: Between the sofa and the table stand a wardrobe.
Между диваном и столом стоит шкаф.
Myezhdu divanam ee stalom stait shkaf.

Everything must remain between us.
[I.e. Don’t tell anyone please]
Всё должно остаться между нами.
Fsyo dalzhno astat'sa myezhdu nami.
