I thought kyo is the second male lead at first and I was so sad. Thankfully he's the endgame.

to me, something important to always mention with the Tohru and Yuki *almost* story is that whenever feelings were being discussed they were almost ALWAYS about Yuki’s, like he’d ask her if she’s okay but it would always come back to him and how he feels somehow. Fruits Basket relies on psychology a lot for the background of characters and thus to me (a psych nerd) it’s foreshadowed from the very beginning that Yuki and Tohru aren’t gonna happen based on that fact alone. Tohru got along immediately with him because he treated her similarly to how Arisa and Hanajima do.
Whereas with Kyo (besides the obvious foreshadow of her favorite being the cat) always listens to Tohru first. It takes till the very end of Season 1 for him to even open up a little bit about his Mom with Tohru. Let alone how he feels, he somehow is able to see when Tohru isn’t doing well and he immediately starts watching her to see what he can do.

I don’t know how else to explain this but it’s what I think of everytime I rewatch the show.

Just having read the manga, I was really impressed with how they resolved the love triangle, pretty much by making all the characters grow, but especially Yuki.

I admit that I did want Tohru to end up with Kyo in the beginning because they were so cute together, but Tohru and Kyo are perfect for each other and I was really happy that Yuki found someone and that he was able to help her in a similar way that Tohru helped him, and I started seeing him as a protective brother for Tohru. ❤❤ I love Fruits Basket. ❤

I always shipped Kyo and Tohru from the beginning. I’m so happy they ended up together! I like Yuki as a character, though I never thought he was the right match for her. Later in the series he even says himself that he isn’t in love with her, but views her as a mother figure who gives him the warmth, support, strength, and affection he never received from his own mom

Aww! I feel like this perfectly portrays where Yuki went wrong. Toru is absolutely that lawful-good archetype who would absolutely help people who need to be helped, but she's also one of those people who won't help unless the person in question asks for help.

When Yuki was kinda just like "I'll tell you later" in that regard, Toru didn't put in the effort to get to know Yuki, since she didn't want to be pushy.

While for Kyo, he was way to honest and awkward to be able to hide his faults from Toru, especially when his master gets involved.

I was rooting for the Toru × Kyo relationship from the start, but I did like when Yuki was in the running, and was sad to see him lost as a love interest.
