"Better to have something - than nothing" I love that.

I've found some people word vomit on their NaNoWriMo projects without any real intent to go back to it and rewrite it. That might sound like a complete waste of time to some, but it's really not. Any amount of practice is good. And practicing being disciplined is vital to any writer, because almost no one purely relies on inspiration. At some point in your writing process, you're gonna get tired or frustrated with your work, and you're just gonna have to push through it.

I'm not saying it'll always work. A few years ago, I started a fantasy novel I'd been planning for a year and couldn't get past 10k. I had so much planning, so many scenes for it, so much love for the characters. But the book wasn't working. And even though I failed that NaNo I'm so glad I attempted it that year. Because I learned quickly it was a novel I simply wasn't in love with. It needed to be abandoned.

Meanwhile, the one I'm working on now has been in development for something like two years and I've been loving every minute of it. I'm not saying it's perfect; it's not. But I sat down and wrote 8k words last Saturday because I love it so much and have so much faith in it. NaNo has given me a concrete deadline for it and the support from other writers has not only ensured I'll get it done while the excitement is still fresh, but that I'll ensure to revise it and hopefully prep it for publication.

So don't be afraid to start now! Any writing you do will be vital to your developing skill.

Also, I knew *Cinder* had been a NaNoWriMo novel. Had no idea she'd gotten started on the whole series in one NaNo. That's amazing! I love The Lunar Chronicles so much.
So that's definitely the kind of inspiration we need to push on :P

I love NaNoWriMo for the reasons you mentionned. No matter what I write, the very point of the challenge is writing! It always ends up being very positive for my work in progress :)
Nice video

I am participating in Nono this year but I'm getting way behind. I work all day and only have the ambition to right for maybe an hour at night.

I'm doing Nano this year. Not doing that great storywise. My plot is too short to do 50k words, but I'm bumping scenes out. . .I'll worry about cleaning them up/stitching them together or scrapping them entirely later. Having trouble with focusing though. My life is so stressful at this point in time it probably wasn't the best year for my first Nano. lol Not all of what I am adding to the Nano document is for the novel itself. I've written a few other things, worked on another story for a bit, etc. But - yeah. I'm getting the words in each day - and figure that even the stuff that ISN'T totally relevant to that novel. . .still counts. I'm still writing *SOMETHING* and what I do get done on the novel can be cleaned up later. And what isn't . . .well, can be used what its meant for or just plain trashed. As you say, its helping build a habit of getting something done each day. Although, I think when Nano is over, I'll be glad to going back to a more relaxing pace. I'd rather take 3 months to write my first draft than stay at this pace all the time. (Although, if my situation changes and I feel better, Not saying I couldn't do this pace, or even do better. But yeah - at this point in my life its not doing me any favours!)

I do feel like some of what i'm writing is a bit crap, but then I write the odd thing I think is pretty good that I wouldn't have necessarily got to without the challenge of NaNoWriMo :)
