The primary reason why people don't get MMR vaccinations is perceived relative risk. Millions and millions of people have had measles, and consider it to have been an inconsequential experience. Of the legions of measles survivors, only a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of them suffered any kind of adverse episode from the measles. So this hysteria about vaccinations seems to be a case of pearl-clutching. The people who lie awake at night, fearing a measles-related nightmare, should make it their mission in life to get everyone in their family vaccinated ASAP. The people who think measles is no big deal, should carry on, and if one of their loved ones suffer a devastating measles-related outcome, they should stoically accept the reality as yet another "s**t happens" event, and then try to live with it. The basic problem is that our society has not sold the idea that "I am my brother's keeper" and we all need to look out for one another. Getting your kids vaccinated is being a good citizen. The problem, of course, is that if your neighbor is too stupid to get his kid vaccinated, maybe his family deserves to have a family member killed or disabled for life. It's a mess, isn't it?
