To get that 12 mm bolt out, it's easier to access it from the front passenger wheelwel. Remove the fender liner material and you'll see the crank pulley. The bolt is located approximately 45 deg to the right of the crank pulley bolt. Undo the bolt with a small ratchet. To pull out the whole assembly it's better to pull it from the top of the engine otherwise you would have to undo the crank pulley to take it out which is a lot of work. This process seems to be the same for all Honda J series v6 engines

This video saved my sanity tonight! I was replacing my alternator and couldn’t figure out how to release the tension enough to get the belt back in place. Another video said you had to use the lower tension arm bolt with a breaker bar from below. I tried that and just about stripped the bolt. I watched this and saw how much travel you can get from above. I tried this method and had the belt back on in just a couple minutes. Thank you!

Make it easy for yourself. Take the passenger side tire off, remove the splash shield, then use 12mm with extension, and finally use 14mm to take off upper tensioner bolt.

So I replaced the same tensioner on my 08 Honda odyssey because the belt was rubbing on both pulley's. Yet when I went to place the belt on, the belt simply slid onto all the pulleys. I tried to push the tensioner pulley back but only the bolt on the tensioner pulley moved not the arm itself. Any info would be appreciated

This is a LOT easier from underneath the vehicle; just turn the wheels to the right (pass. side) and disconnect the plastic shield.

Is it common to hear a very faint knock if these pulleys go bad on Honda pilots? Thanks in advance

It's funny to see all the different ways mechanics do things. I'm sure that the making of this video was 10 times longer

I’m surprised that you didn’t remove the passenger front tire and inner wheel well coverings to more easily access this part

FYI... Mine uses a 19MM not a 14mm for the tensioner. Two different ones.
