I Live Like A Hobbit

Emma Orbach is the real-life hobbit living off the grid in west Wales.

The 58-year-old has spent the last 13 years living with no electricity in a self-built roundhouse. Her daily chores involve tending to her vegetable plot and collecting fruit, tending to her three goats, seven chickens and two horses and chopping firewood.

She gets her drinking water from a nearby stream and only ventures to the shops for treats like rice and chocolate. Her evenings are spent in the glow of her stove, cooking her dinner and playing music on her Celtic harp.

She has this energy unlike any off-grid dweller I've seen so far. It's not suburban, or preppy, or privileged,  it seems so calm, wise, experienced, and above all, very raw. She's probably been on this earth, more than once.

The way the world is going, I really have a strong pull to do a stunt like this, just leave people, hang around goats and chicken, get back to a state where things make sense.

My brother sent this too me because I lived off the grid for over 7 years in the 90's- 30 miles from the nearest town. I went to town once a month for supplies.  I had chickens, goats and rabbits, canning veggies from my huge garden and wild edibles. My 'hut' was made out of beer and pop cans from the roadside ditches. A solar pump pumped water from a spring fed creek. In the last few years I had solar electricity. I absolutely LOVED it and miss it SO MUCH.  I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had the right partner to share it with me. Living off the land is a lot of work, but it's peaceful and awesome.
