I suggest everyone try bowling on a sport pattern, this will really humble you, and show you just how good Packy and the pros are. I averaged 197 on a house shot, and 134 on a 2:1 ratio sport shot…

I loved the point you mentioned with “Bowling at Different Centers”. That reminded me when I was a member of the Manhattan High School Indians Bowling Team in Manhattan, Kansas. One of our tournaments was in Topeka (West Ridge Lanes) and they had a HEAVY oil pattern, and it took me a bit to figure out the pattern. My home alley was FAR lighter than West Ridge that I got myself a bowling ball to help out with a heavy oil pattern.

Great stuff guys! Pro bowlers are the way they are because of how much they bowl, practicing with purpose, learning, working out, getting coached and working with sports psychologists to sharpen their mental game. This is their profession. If someone spent 40-45 hours per week workimg on their game, bowling in tournaments, and practicing all over the place, they would eventually get better. Thanks for this segment.

I'm just a beginner bowler, but I have found out the #4: practice with purpose has been very useful for me. Everytime I go to the bowling alley, I try to concentrate on maybe one or two things that needs to get better. It could be release, it could be balance or it could be steps. It's the only way if you really want to learn something.

Great video. Lots of tips to help improve. I am spending the summer practicing and bowling sweepers. I have had a couple bad outings, but I am learning every time.

1) Matt’s editing has improved *greatly.* Love it.
2) Nice big shoutout to Maximum Bob in here.
3) As was said, spares, spares, spares. Most likely reason for missed cuts/missed checks.

Thanks Packy. That was very informational and you hit everything spot on. I don't bowl anymore but I used to practice most of your techniques about 5 times a week. If people applied 2 or 3 of your tips, they'd see their average increase. Good job with this video.

That was excellent advice. I bowled for a few years and competed in many tournaments up to the national level. Here in Canada, we bowl 5 pin which is a small ball game and hook balls are actually disadvantageous. But aside from that, it's great advice for all bowling games, and even though in 5 pin you're not deliberately throwing hook balls, you still have to adapt to how well the lane is oiled as the ball does move a bit. Targeted practice, and practicing in different houses is a really good advice, even using different balls. Because you're straight shooting, you don't need 15 balls but 2 sets is nice. It's a much harder game than standard tenpin and all splits are nearly impossible to spare. If one set any of the splits on all lanes on a 48 lane house, I'd be shocked if you could make one. Especially the most frustrating headpin split.

Can't say enough about making your spares. Last year in my first state tournament, I missed so many spares, didn't shoot above 200 at all and didn't come close to being satisfied. After a year of practice, I didn't miss a single makeable this year at states, averaged 200 and currently sit in the top 30 overall. Find a system that works for you and make your spares!

also, don't worry yourself with what your score is during practice. It's practice!

Oh, I love your suggestion about balls! .. I now have a 12 ball arsenal .. I usually take 9 of them to the lanes when I practice. And yes, I take 9 of them because I throw 9 of them during practice. I have so many bowling balls for just exactly why you said .. so I can learn them! .. they all react differently under different conditions. I am trying to learn how they react for each condition and when the lanes transition. I am also using them to learn how to control my shots by throwing the completely wrong ball for the condition, but doing things to try to strike anyway. Basically, get myself out of my comfort zone and do what I can to make it work. Throw my strongest ball on a dry lane and learn to control going up the back of the ball, and things like that. I also frequently will play 1 game using my plastic spare ball, playing from the gutter and hooking my plastic ball into the pocket. I find this helps me to gain accuracy, especially accuracy when trying to crank as high of rev rate as I can. While practicing with the spare ball, I will also try to throw as fast as I can, as much rev rate as I can, and hit 100% dead center of my target board.

If I could add something... I would say, "Get a spinner and add/subtract surface to your equipment so you know which surfaces are most effective at which houses and patterns. It is part of knowing your bowling balls."
