Thank you. I just bought the same bike, a 2015 one, new, but a leftover model in a bike shop. This confirms my choice.

After watching a few of your videos on the Trek, I was interested so I went to the Trek website and saw they were going to sell the 520 frameset early next year. Then I wondered about maybe getting a used complete 520 from Ebay and switching out what I didn't want with new parts. So I ended up getting a vintage 520 from 1984! Now I've gone full circle and am restoring the bike with the most original parts I can find!

One of the advantages for your bar con shifters is that they are easy to replace when they break on the road. I love dropbar integrated combo shifters (brakes and shifters) and used them on my cross Canada trip but changing cables after wear, tear and a brake was a pain in the butt.

Yep, I also like my 520. Like you I added a stem riser to get that more relaxed ride position.

Dear Tice,
Nice! I have been watching your videos over almost the past year and had not missed even single one. Good job, well filmed and well explained/discussed. Best wishes.

Your drive train screams clean me. I hope you were just in between cleanings. Great setup.

Like my 520. Like you I think I'm changing out my tires before my tour. Same feelings on the shifters. Just takes a little time to get used to. Thanks for the great review and take care, Al

Nice bike. The good thing about bar end, or any friction shifters, is how little there is to go wrong with them.

Nice review, but I also recommend you to change or even clear your chain and casette. And of course, replace bottom bracket, for the upcoming Australia trip, because in my opinion, it's the one season part, and beside that, it's one of the cheapest 'upgrade' to your bike, and trust me, your Trek will be so grateful :)
Good luck in the future, keep filming and riding, thumbs up! 👍👍

If I could make a recommendation, have you considered the Rolhoff hub Drive? They are quite expensive, and I don’t believe your bike would support the belt drive, but it would support the chain drive. An even better option, and one that I have been considering recently for a new touring bike is the priority bicycle model 600. That one comes with the 12 speed pinion gear box. The price is it round 2000 American dollars. The priority 600 does come with the belt drive. Both options also come with a twist shifters. Take a look at Ryan van Duzer’s review of the priority 600. It is very impressive.I might be spelling his name wrong but he is a YouTube channel touring cyclist.

Been looking at what my “next level bike”’would be and this is probably my best option. I’ve got an 2002 Bianchi Eros right now which is a heck of a bike for the money used, but for cruising and commuting the geometry is pretty tiring. I think your setup is pretty close to my ideal one as well! Was going to put a cambium saddle on before i even saw your videos, glad to get another vote of confidence

Hi Tice, you should really think about upgrading your bike to a Rohloff Hub.  I know, it is expensive but worth the Money. Keep your bike, stick on chain (lower friction compared to beltdrive and safe maintanance) just change the drive.  I had a bike with deore XT for years and one day  I spent the money to upgrade on a Rohloff - what a difference! I promise, you will never go back to any other drive. Now it is my second travelbike and I still use my old Rohloff, since 10 years now. Beneath my wife, the Rohloff is the best decision of my life. And if you still have some money, get a tubus rack, lightweight, strong and nearly indestructable. For the light I recommend the Ixon core frontlight. I use it for some years in every weather condition and still happy. USB chargable, bright light, waterproof.

I have the Trek 920 which I find very useful and lighter than the 520. I have looked at the 2019 520 mainly do the change in shifters and the addition of a front rack, as well as a change in the geometry by the lengthening of the head tube for a more upright riding position. Hope to see you in some JaYoe videos in Australia with Matt.
