Good job fella, used this method for years, best done with 2 guys, one holds in the same place as the datum point, and shouts up or down so the other guy so he can set his datum point to the same level, great for setting building levels and columns etc. Battery never runs flat, LOL

I have used a water level for years and years. I was in commercial construction and we always had one on the job because it is consistently more accurate than than a laser level and can be used around corner and blind spots. Unlike a laser level we never had to have a water level calibrated because it was always correct. The only downside was that you have to make sure there are no bubbles in the tubing. Fill the tubing with water the day before you are going to use it and hang the open ends higher than the bottom bend with no high spots in between. An 8 foot ladder works well. We would use a water level to check the accuracy of a laser level, If they didn't match you knew it was the laser level that was off because gravity doesn't change.

I’ve used this method since my apprenticeship in the shipbuilding industry, it’s is by far the best way to level bulkheads. Although I’ve come across some jump up post graduates just left university, implying that laser are far better…………hence they didn’t last a day with me, and ended up with a broken laser over their thick deluded skull 🤣👍😜

The great pyramid base foundation was levelled with a water channel, still the best way to find level.

Be careful with another issue as well. Don't have one part of the tube out in the sun and the other half in the shade. Otherwise the water in the warm end will be less dense and thus be higher than the cold end.

Would this work for checking to see if the mobile home is level. Like if i went to the rooms and put one end in the corner of the room and the other in another corner

your on the level,
watch out for trapped bubbles, which I am sure you know about, I keep my one stored.
in pitch black, or you can get " pond algae " growing in the water, which creates gas bubbles, which stops it working properly.
if you put the ends together, and mark the water level on both, you don't have to look at the other end, if it is out of sight, or around the corner etc
there great, I have been using them for over 50 years, for setting up roof gutters levels, to get the " fall " correct.

If the earth is a spherical object (p)
Then the surface of liquid water MUST be curved (q)
Do you see any problems with the fact that a water level is a tool for establishing a horizontal plane of reference and all horizontals are parallel with the plane of the horizon?

How would you compare this to an electronic water level. The main drawback to this way is that if you're working alone over a fairly long distance you might not be able to see the other side. I guess you could just make adjustments and walk back and forth until you get it level. Is there anything else or does what I'm saying make sense?
