The cracks you mentioned are not the result of a weak mix.
It's movement, either ground or in this case caused by no lintel. The cracks will happen whatever the mix and this is the best option, no one wants cracks running through the bricks which happens if it's a strong mix.

Rainwater falling and splashing onto brickwork due to it not being able to soak into the ground will cause spalling.

Yeh....trench fill a metre deep next to 18 inch foundation in clay. 😮

Mortar has to be weaker than the brick or block being built.
