Hexbeam Antenna / Hex Beam (ALL ABOUT DX Hexagonal Beam) On The Ground! Any DX?

A quick and dirty set-up today, 16 Feb 2021.
Even the 20m wire is sagging.

Conditions on that very day were rated as "Poor" on 20m for Day and Night.

100 Watts on the trusted good old (I bought mine in 2016 when this device wasn't that popular HIHI) ICOM IC-7300.

Did I have any luck?

Hexbeam on a tripod on the ground will be for me too until figure out where to mount it without getting a divorce lol. Great DX. Well done!

Hi Kevin, and thank you for the video which inspired me to make a very similar experiment. Today I will probably finish assembling hexbeam and so far the antenna is almost on the ground (approx. 1m above ground level) to have easy access to any part mounted on the sticks. My idea is to take part in CQWWDX Contest SSB (I attend every year in single band QRP category depending of propagation I choose most effective band) at following agenda: Saturday Oct. 28th - hexbeam is @ 1m ground level; Sunday 29th I will rise the antenna as high as possible, probably @ 5-6m. Turning antenna will be done manually 😉. Then I will discover wheather SWR is O.K. on at least 3 bands (14, 21, 28) depending antenna height. As I prefer CW the hexbeam will be mounted @7m with solid rotator. Wish me good luck in the contest 👍. Best 73'ss from Wim, HF5WIM (ex.SP5DDJ)

Sometimes I also make proper DX with silly antennas; it usually turns out that the other station has a huge antenna array, high up in the sky...

While I don't own one yet, I think that the hexbeam design offers the best trade offs in efficiency and cost if one is looking to replace an end fed or dipole wire antenna as opposed to the quite increased costs of a tower yagi/log periodic setup. Perhaps also with less wind loading though I haven't seen a table that compares this. Thanks so much for posting this as an inspiration. 73 DE W8LV BILL

I just built a 4-element hex beam, I tried it on the ground, and it seemed to work better than on my roof, does it need to be over earth? Also, I dont seem to notice any difference if I rotate it? Thanks For any help.
