How to Fly a Circle to Land Approach | Partial Panel IFR

In the final portion of our IFR checkride, we're flying a circle to land approach at our home airport Capital City (KCXY). To make matters worse, the examiner has failed both our attitude indicator and directional gyro. We'll have to fly this approach partial panel!

As ever, a brilliant mini series on a subject that I would probably struggle with if I was training to be a pilot. Thank you.

I'm loving this series, thank you for putting these out. I remember my instrument checkride, it involved an NDB hold, and an LDA approach...all on a hazy marginal VFR day.

Thank you for making such great instructional videos!

Why did you pick Harrisburg? Was a pleasant surprise when I saw Capital City and Harrisburg pop up in a random youtube video - many approaches and rust knocked off the airplane there !

Don't forget to let ATC / Tower know of any instrument failure. That was always a biggie in my instrument training.

I definitely wouldn’t say that this was a more difficult checkride than typical. I think it’s right in line with what to expect.

Is it common procedure for ATC to give vectors to the runway?
Or can a pilot just land without any directional instructions?

I have dual G5s (w/backup batteries) in my plane and no vacuum. Would the DPE fail them both? I completely get a vacuum failure taking out the AI/DG, but how are DPEs failing glass cockpits and blended cockpits these days? Without an electrical failure and dual backup battery failure, a dual G5 (or comparable instrument) failure would make me the unluckiest guy in the air 😅
