I think it's because a lot of young teens (as I did back then) can relate to the coming of age themes the series has to offer. A huge part of the series is about the characters finding out more about themselves as the story progresses (especially in MOTHER 2). As a 30-year-old, I don't relate as much as I did when I was young, but I did.

I suspect that part of it might have to do with the fact that undertale blew up. I swear toby fox is the best advertising the mother series ever got.

The 90s was a very unique time period. We learned being Whacky, Crazy, and Weird was a source of creativity. We were not Avant Gard because our goal wasn't to be anti everything. Instead it was findIng ourselves via vibrant shapes, colors, ideas. Sega (Sonic), Mario, Rug Rats, Space Ghost, Rocko, Beavis and Butthead. Earthbound was something many of us missed because it was invisible in a world where internet was still a baby. But looking back on it, Earthbound represents everything great about the 90s. I love Earthbound. I don't want to time travel. I want the youth to enjoy what we were lucky enough to enjoy in our youth.

That definitely tracks. Im 21 but i first played Earthbound when i was 12 via totally legitimate means, and really like it and mother 1 and 3 a lot since i played them all in pretty quick succession lol.
