The Mythbusters debunked this awhile ago as well

Let's be real, if hammers exploded like that they would be even more fun that they already are

I've used the anvil trick described here, and the big thing some folks are forgetting is that you're not hitting the other hammer face: you're hitting the material between them. That, and you're usually not taking major swings went you're doing this.

His editor did a great job removing all the explosions in this video

Your last line is so perfectly spot on. If there were even a semi-reasonable chance of a hammer exploding when struck by another hammer we all would have seen multiple shorts and tiktoks about it before you ever had the chance to make this video

That's the internet. Loudly proclaiming things they don't know

Bet they are the same people who never put a plane blade down on a wooden bench.

Blacksmith here, exactly right. In fact. Blacksmiths will take a sledge hammer head say around 20 to 30 lbs. Cut the handle off, inlet that into a stump and there you go. Cheap effective anvil. No explosions.

that last line is really worth thinking about. I can name almost any action, no matter how random and obscure and contrived, and i can find at least a single video of it, , if not many. If you've never seen a video of a given thing and can't search at least several of them up, chances are that what you've described just isn't a thing that happens.

I'm a blacksmith, I've heard many blacksmith describe spalling wounds and they are not dangerous only for your eyes. One described a chip going right through his leather aproon, clothes and into his thigh.
I haven't met a single blacksmith that doesn't take spalling seriously and takes meassures to prevent it. You don't hit your anvil face and specially edge hard with a hammer. Tools that you hit with a hammer you make softer than your hammer or you use a softer hammer. If something is mushrooming or cracking you dress it down.
If woodworkers do this often and they don't have horror stories then maybe it's not so dangerous with the kind of forces involved, or claw hammers aren't very hard. I won't tell you how to do your job. But then again, woodworkers drag down the number of fingers per capita pretty hard.

Explode? Thats a bit far. It'll chip and take your eye out, but defo won't explode.

"We know this isn't true because if it were there'd be way more videos about it" is a wildly accurate statement that I feel could apply to so many things

My father lost an eye striking 2 hammers together. A piece of one of the hammers put his eye out. There are plenty of people out here with injuries.

Well. That happend to me 8 years ago. A piece of metal flew from the hammer and it ended up into my hand. Doctors didn't want to remove it because they said it is into an awkward place and it might cause more dmg trying to remove it than leaving it here. And here am i now.

Explode?! Why would somebody think that? That’s just silliness

I was using the head of a framing hatchet as a wedge to split wood when a little piece chipped off at high speed and embedded itself in my thumb. I still do stuff like that all the time but the dangers are very real.

Spalling is dangerous, especially if the piece flies at high speed into your flesh or your eye. It happened to me with a hammer and an ax!

The only hammer I seen explode was MC Hammer back in 1989 . “U can’t touch this “ 🔨
