Sounds accurate. You really don't understand what you're supposed to be doing a lot of the time like the guy said. They kinda call you up and say "This broke, you need to fix it" and sometimes it's stuff you didn't get training on.

Former ET here, 1980 to 1986. Got out as an ET1(SW). Looks like a lot of new stuff out there but I think I could still teach these folks some soldering skills! LOL 40+ years later and I still use and teach folks the US Navy 6 step troubleshooting method.

Former Navy ET.
Boot in FLA in Aug of 88 and schooling (A and C) until May of 1990. I still made E-5 in less than 3 years. I was able to move up fast because I was well trained.

After reporting to my ship, they soon sent me back to attend AN/SPA-25G C school in Oct of 1990 at the 32nd St annex ET C “school house”.

As I remember it, that SPA was constantly over heating because it didn’t have an exhaust fan.

While in the gulf (the A/C wasn’t the best) I had to open it up almost every day to let heat out.

It frequently would flake out due to overheating and one of the CIC guys would wake me up at 3 am.

Good times!

Everything Technician. SPA-25 Golf. I wish! I worked on the SPA-25 Charlie. My oldest piece of gear was an SRN-6 TACAN. My favorite piece of gear was the Collins R-390. Best rig ever. I believe it was the R-2368 replacing the R-1051. The AN/WSC-3 was a good rig. Not enough power. Hope they fixed that.

My ET training and experience, 1971 - 77, gave me a leg up to pass the exams and meet the qualifications to eventually become an Electronics Tech for the US Postal Service. Pays well.
