In the film it could actually "shorten" the wheel base.
The front and rear tires could move closer together (while in motion) and the batmobile would rise a bit, gaining more ground clearance.
(I know how crazy that sounds, but there's a short documentary on Batman V Superman blu ray about this car that shows it).
