It was an honor of a life time. May 7th 2021 at the National Nordic Museum. Honored. Humbled. Heartful. Knight of the White Rose of Finland.

It is not everyday when the President of your country recognizes you with an honor of a knighthood. Never knowing and expecting that from my service as an Honorary Consul for Finland in Washington State it came my way. Recently we were able to celebrate it with a ceremony at the National Nordic Museum where a handful of vaccinated people came together for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic separation.

It was an honor of a life time and humbling to be recognized.

And it made me think about the once-in-a-lifetime events in our lives. What are the markers of such of an occasion? Sometimes once-in-a-lifetime event is so bad that we’re grateful for never experiencing them again. Other times the events are so sweet that you cannot stop thinking about them. Sometimes that special sweetness comes in small packages, like the moment you feel seen or heard.

I remember how my Professor @Aino Sallinen at the University of Jyväskylä impressed me when she had an office hour with me. She gave me her full attention, turned off the phone and made it clear she was not to be disturbed when talking with me – a lowly student. She made me feel like I mattered. She showed me what respect is by providing me her full attention. It made me a better student, a better employee and a better boss … and a terrific coach over the years.

When an acknowledgment or recognition make us feel seen, the ripple effects are powerful. Their impact can be felt by many more than the one honored.

What are your once-in-a-lifetime experiences?
