This was my first novel by Grady Hendrix and that being said, I absolutely loved it. I understand that it's a hit or miss for people since it can frustrate people that this story of violence against women and racial inequality is being written by a white man. For me, it didn't take away from the story because I was still able to see and feel exactly what these women were experiencing at the hands of their husbands and children--feelings of frustration, lack of respect and dignity, etc. I think Hendrix is introducing another form of the vampire that seduces and leaves one a shell of a being (MARRIAGE). Not to say ALL marriages are like this, but for many of the characters in this story (especially Patricia) they had an identity before being a wife and mother but were "seduced" by an outsider that they let into their lives who hunger: food, emotional support, sex, etc. These women are physically and emotionally drained by the monsters already in their homes. Patricia is constantly gaslit by James and her husband--she could kill a vampire and bury his limbs, but the only thing she could do to get rid of the other monster was to get a divorce.

Great review! This is on my tbr pile and I cant wait to read it. I've read a couple of his other books and loved them all. I highly recommend his book My Best Friend's Exorcism! It takes place in Charleston as well and it has all the Grady Hendrix ingredients you mentioned here plus it almost made me cry in the best way

i just finished this last week and i LOVED it so much. i think it’s my favorite book. i’m a house wife, im in a book club and we read horror. I WAS LIKE I LOVE IT 😭😭😭😭😭 (just got imaginary friend in the mail today and i’m so excited)

I so wish I wud have read it and not audio, audio female voice was not good, not to me anyway, my reading could have made it more scary and suspenseful then her voice was doing

Finished the book last night, I hate the men, like all the men in the book all the time ahaha I was expecting like a bunch of vampires or more than the same vampire story, but it was meticulously good

I've read both horrostör and my best friends exorcism by GH and highly recommend them. I listened to the audiobooks and they were great. I'm going to start this one tomorrow!
