I show you how we've turned our annual kale plants into perennial kale "trees".

*This is the 8th video in our Good Life For All series. Each Monday I’ll pop up a video to help inspire folks in building climate resilience for their homes and communities.

You can grow more plants from the little side stems. A leaf with a bit of a heal, popped in soil and kept moist becomes a new plant.

Thank you for this tip! I didn't realize that kale could be perennial.

Oh, and one of my favourite (tuscan) kale recipes is: chop into strips, steam lightly, then fry off in an iron skillet with olive oil, garlic and anchovies. Yum.

Thank you for inspiring the idea to create a miniature permaculture food forest, using perennial kale as the trees! I intend growing some kale and planting things like ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) in the lower layer; which makes an awesome herbal tea and was once used to flavour and preserve beer before the introduction of hops. Basically, utilising any edible, herbal plants which don’t require much maintenance and are mostly ground creepers. I really love the inspiration and outside of the box thinking that your videos always inspire!

Hello, I am writing to you from Colombia. In my family we have collard greens that grow by shoots from the main stem, just today I collected 100 shoots. These cabbages do not die, I have one from 3 years ago

Hey Hannah, I saw your video about a year ago and planted about a dozen Tuscan kale in my veggie patch and have started to train it 😊

Just wondering, doesn’t kale go to seed? How do you stop it from doing so? Thanks

Great video. I’ve tried this (in Victoria) but haven’t been able to get it to last for more than a year before it goes to seed. Maybe I should just cut it right back at that point. Any thoughts?

Is this a perennial kale variety or does it grow as a perennial in your climate? I’m not aware of a curly kale variety that is perennial

Hi Hannah, what about white moth and plants going to seed. I am in Sydney and these are problems. Regards Kim

Thankyou so much for making this video. My husband thought that our plants were some freakish one off!
Can I ask what treatment you would recommend for that pesky looking invasion that looks like a mass of grey dandruff? I want my kale trees to grow for another season if I can.

What is the species name for this perennial kale?

Kale is also very resistant to pests unlike the other brassicas.

We tried this but the white moths went to town, became a hassle for us to be picking them off all the time
